Bungie's Marathon Hits 143,000 Players but Feedback Is Divided

- $40 is the right price point, or at least close to it. (Maybe $30?) I will happily pay for a (mostly) complete package without all the constant ads and desperate money grabs that come with most free-to-play games. It feels less scummy to just pay for something up front. #Marathon #ServerSlam

- If Bungie wants this game to have wide appeal, it needs to be more friendly to casual players. A certain type of player will push through the grind and muscle through the clunky menus/UI. But I can see a lot of people bouncing off because they die so fast and lose key gear.

- For a game releasing in less than a week, the game still feels undercooked. The time to kill is so short that you might not even fire your gun at someone before you’re down. I get that some of that is just the nature of extraction shooters, but some deaths can be brutal.

- The story, such as it is in a multiplayer extraction shooter, is fine but unremarkable. Lots of generic corporate cyberpunk stuff and mystery box nonsense. I do like the little bit of humor, like how ONI dryly says your runner doesn’t own anything and you owe the company.

- The art direction, sound design, and level design rule. Incredibly atmospheric and distinct. All the neon is a nice touch after so many shooters with bland, lifeless levels and color palettes.

- The tutorial needs work. Doesn’t explain nearly enough about key elements.

Thoughts after completing the tutorial and a few more rounds of the #Marathon #ServerSlam

- As always, Bungie nails the basic gun play. Few better at it in the business. But the default settings need tweaking. Aiming and moving are both a little too slow and cumbersome. Adjust before starting.

Not my game. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Managed to get in a couple of runs in the @marathonthegame.bungie.net #ServerSlam tonight.

The vibes are goooood around this. Though a few of the menus are a little unintuitive to start.

The gameplay plays pretty good - and I'm not afraid to lose my gear this early. Dying is chill. Game is fun!

Marathon's Server Slam Is Almost Here.
The pre-launch hype feels different this time 👀

Leveling up the fit before the servers melt.
Because if we’re grinding, we’re doing it in style.

a stark, minimalist warning screen that appears during the Marathon Server Slam loading sequence. The entire frame is dominated by a black background with centered white text, giving it that clean, Bungie‑style “system boot” vibe.

🟣 What the screen displays
A bold header reads “MARATHON IS PRERELEASE SOFTWARE”, using a clean, all‑caps font that feels very much like a diagnostic or terminal message.

Beneath it, two short lines explain the state of the build:

Some features may not work correctly

The game might crash

At the bottom, a support line directs players to help.bungie.net.

In the top‑right corner, an NVIDIA overlay notification pops in, showing “Press Alt + Z to open the overlay”, which reinforces that this is a PC build and likely the first boot after launch.

🟢 Overall feel
The whole screen looks like a controlled, intentional part of the boot sequence—almost like a system initialization message rather than a typical game splash screen. It sets expectations for instability while keeping the aesthetic clean and diegetic, fitting Marathon’s tech‑heavy presentation.

a striking split-screen title/loading screen that feels very Marathon—bold, high‑contrast UI on the left, atmospheric sci‑fi worldbuilding on the right.

🟡 Left side: the UI layer
The entire left half is a flat, saturated yellow panel with a clean, utilitarian layout. At the top, MARATHON is printed in heavy black type, almost like a corporate or industrial label. Beneath it:

A prompt reads “PRESS 🖱 TO CONTINUE”, using a mouse icon instead of text, which gives it that sleek, diegetic interface vibe.

A row of small symbols sits underneath—barcode, an X, a camera icon, the number 2893, and a checkered-flag‑style icon. They feel like in‑universe system glyphs or metadata tags rather than literal UI elements.

At the bottom-left corner, “ESC EXIT TO DESKTOP” appears in tiny, understated text, almost intentionally de‑emphasized.

The whole panel feels like a branded access terminal—clean, bold, and slightly mysterious.

🔵 Right side: the world layer
The right half shifts dramatically into a cool, blue‑toned sci‑fi environment. It looks like a corridor or tunnel inside a futuristic structure—metallic, illuminated by glowing strips and volumetric light. The perspective draws your eye toward a bright, distant opening, giving a sense of depth and motion, almost like you’re about to be launched forward.

The contrast between the flat yellow UI and the immersive blue corridor creates a deliberate tension: interface vs. world, player vs. simulation, system vs. space.

🎛️ The dividing symbol
At the center, bridging both halves, is a circular emblem—clean, geometric, and unmistakably Marathon‑coded. It acts like a seal or portal between the UI layer and the game world, reinforcing the idea that you’re stepping through a system boundary.

trying this #Marathon #serverSlam out.
Going in hopeful since i love cyberpunk & the brutalist design language it uses & also since i do not care about the opinions of (fake) "gamers."

Results from a personality test for potential Runners for the game Marathon. Across the top reads "CERTIFICATE" in the left corner, and "NR . 784902" in the right corner. A text box taking the right 3/4 of the upper third of the screen reads:
"RESULT ANALYSIS"
:Your answers reflect patience, precision, and respect for process. You believe improvement comes through refinement, not disruption. You value how things work as much as what they achieve. Progress, to you, is careful, deliberate, and engineered.:

In the center right is a form of pie chart with aptitude between seven different groups (listed clockwise from the top): MIDA, UESC, CyAc, NuCaloric, SekGen, Traxus, Arachne. The "pie" is a circle of six concentric rings, intersected with lines from the center to each of the listed groups. A polygon generated from the survey response data stretches out to each of the names to reflect alignment with that organization. On the scale of 1 to 6 based on the rings of the pie, my survey results are as follows: MIDA, 2.1; UESC, 1.8; CyAc, 2.1; NuCaloric, 2.5; SekGen, 3.7; Traxus, 1.6; Arachne, 2.1.

Below "CERTIFICATE" in the top left corner is a fragmented ASCII picture with a logo in the center, presumably of SekGen, the organization I am supposedly aligned with. Below the ASCII code is a text box reading:
NAME: RUNNER
EMPLOYMENT: SEKGEN

SERIAL NUMBER:
A21AAAEC-055C-442D-BF00-B0E7DBF600D7

Below this text box is another box that reads:
EXPIRATION DATE: 10.02.3209
SERIAL NUMBER:
EMPLOYMENT: SEKGEN

Directly below that reads:
LOCALIZATION: TAU CETI IV
DNA SIGNATURE: #9A7CF23D
STATUS: ACTIVE

Below those text boxes and the survey results on the right is another box, which reads on the left: "IN CASE OF SYSTEM BREACH OR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR, INITIATE IMMEDIATE RETIREMENT PROTOCOL"

The text "/!/ CERTIFICATE ENCRYPTED /!/" repeats across the bottom of the image.
