SK Telecom Malware Breach Exposes 27 Million Phone Numbers  Last week, South Korean telecom firm SK Telecom announced that a malware-based data breach exposed over 27 million phone numbers, jeopardising user privacy and raising concerns in the cybersecurity community. The breach apparently lasted more than three years and targeted systems at SK Shieldus, a security subsidiary split out from SK Telecom in 2021.  The attack was initially discovered by South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT, which revealed that malware was secretly gathering mobile phone numbers from hundreds of company clients' SK Shieldus protection software between May 2021 and early 2024. Authorities described it as an ongoing supply chain attack that remained undiscovered for years. Following the breach's disclosure, SK Telecom and SK Shieldus both expressed their regret in public. About 90 customer organisations used the impacted software, which had malicious malware placed in it that allowed subscriber data to be stolen without authorisation. SK Shieldus emphasised that only mobile phone numbers were compromised, not identities, personal identification numbers, or geographical information.  “We take this incident very seriously and deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our customers,” the company noted in a formal statement. The attackers are believed to have included a malicious module during the software packaging process, allowing malware to be installed alongside legitimate security products. Investigators revealed that the malware used external command-and-control servers to exfiltrate phone numbers. South Korean authorities are currently investigating whether the intrusion was caused by nation-state actors or cybercriminals. The supply chain intrusion is especially concerning given that SK Shieldus offers endpoint protection and other security services. The incident has raised worries about software integrity, zero-trust architecture, and the threats of malicious insider access or unprotected build environments in the telecom and security sector.  Authorities in South Korea confirmed to the fact that all affected client environments have been cleared and that efforts are being made to improve malware detection, code auditing, and endpoint monitoring. To avoid such incidents in the future, new criteria for key software providers are also being drafted.  The breach is similar to other well-known instances in which reputable software pipelines were used to add malware backdoors. The incident highlighted the significance of cyber resilience, threat detection, and supply chain security in telecom infrastructure once more.
