An excerpt from the chapter. It reads as follows: Jackie was no stranger to death, or to the act of killing. The Heap made for an unforgiving home—edible plants were few in number, and the majority of its inhabitants were intelligent hunters. Some were more beastly in nature, such as the Kuzumade, but most had similar levels of intelligence to Humans—not to mention similar body plans. Where was the line between a 'person’ and a ‘monster’? Recent events had convinced Jackie that there wasn’t really a line at all. Lii was a monster—a Mimic—but she was clearly also a person. They would have previously considered Kritta monsters, but now they knew that civilized Kritta lived outside of the Heap. In the right circumstances, could even something like a Kumori be a civilized person? Such ponderings weren’t of importance at the moment. What was important was that Jackie had, by necessity, killed throughout their entire life, and that included killing things that could be argued to be people. That was simply the normal way of life for them. Things hadn’t seemed much different in the outside world, either; they had larger groups of people and fewer intelligent monsters, and they used terms like ‘war’, but it seemed that this world, too, was built on a foundation of violence and killing.

She was too fast for it to land a hit, but the mech was too armored for her kicks to do any real damage. She was strong enough to bat it around and keep it distracted, but not enough to knock it down or make any real progress. She knew that was probably enough. Her job wasn’t to eliminate all the enemies herself, but to prevent them from causing further damage to the pier or their ships. To that end, keeping a mech occupied all by herself was more than enough of a contribution. Even if she couldn’t defeat it, she could handle it until one of the people who could arrived to take over. And yet…

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: It was too late to change course and evade. The sword’s arc was too low to duck beneath, too high to leap above. With no other option, Jahd faced the oncoming blade and held his own in front of him, placing one hand on the flat as he braced for impact. Against a foe several times his size, one wielding a sword several times the size of his own, he prepared to block the attack. Metal met metal, sparks screeching between the blades. The smaller warrior stood firm, bearing the brunt of the colossus’s strike with ease—naturally, such a thing did not occur, but Jahd accomplished what he set out to. Instead of being cleft in twain, his body was merely sent careening backwards, flipping through the air like a ragdoll.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: That its strategy had been overcome was unexpected, but it did not matter. No, it should not matter. With the power granted by the master, it should be able to kill each of these creatures with ease; instead, they were gaining the upper hand. They had wounded it, even though they were weaker. It was inconceivable. How were they overwhelming it when it alone had been blessed by the master? This was just like before. Things that were weaker than it had banded together, gained the upper hand, and wounded it. Therefore, just like before, the correct thing to do would be to flee. If it escaped, it could regenerate, gather new forces, and invent new stratagems. It could discover how the living kept overwhelming it and prevent that from ever happening again. It could fulfill the purpose the master had granted it.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Even so, she didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. She couldn’t exactly disobey Lieutenant Marjoriee, and her role in this stratagem was an essential one. Someone had to be there to wrangle the Firefly, lest it fly off in some random direction or suddenly decide it felt less tame than the day before and eat one of the soldiers it was meant to serve. That someone ended up being Annelys. She should have foreseen this and specialized in taming monsters that were less useful, but that opportunity was long past. While that stood at the top of her grand list of ‘Things Annelys Ought To Have Done’, right below it on the list was ‘not miss that Harpy’. She’d thought for sure she’d lined up a perfect shot, but the bullet had merely hit the pirate’s wing. To make matters worse, that hadn’t even been enough to completely prevent the Harpy from flying, and she and her companion had flown off to hide in some other tree.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Jackie found the smell of smoke to be quite pleasant. This wasn’t necessarily because they thought it smelled good; everything else in the Forgotten Heap smelled of blood or rot, so smoke won by default as the only alternative. Both of those smells were strong here in the Kumori’s lair. They’d gone to the effort of dragging the monster’s body out of the ruins, but the ground was still stained with its blood, and the air still stank of its victims; it was remarkable how well the smell of death clung to bones. As if to spite the stench, Jackie took a deep breath, filling their nostrils with the burning sensation of smoke instead. They then proceeded to cough harshly. They were seated against the doorway of the eastern tower, a smoldering campfire sitting inside the structure behind them. Once it was clear they would be spending the night here, the group had determined this to be the most stable of the surrounding structures; it was also tall enough to mask the smoke and light of their fire. Their companions sat around the fire inside, presumably sleeping. Jackie had volunteered to be the first watch; they had far too much to think about, so they doubted they’d sleep anytime soon either way.

It reads as follows: Jackie: “So, how long were you hibernating, anyway?~” After admiring her ferocious appetite for a while, Jackie finally posed one of their many curiosities in a singsong tone. Lii: “Um…” She paused for a moment to take a deep breath, having neglected to breath while she ate. “I’m n-not sure, actually. I doubt it was that long, though. Maybe five, ten… um, twenty years at the most.” Sam: “At the most?” He scratched his head. “How old even are you?” Lii: “Um… around a hundred?” She gave the question only a moment of thought before offering an absurd answer rather nonchalantly, then returned her full attention to her food. Strade clicked his tongue at her reply. “Yeah, as if. You look like a kid.” Sam: “She looks our age.” Strade: “She looks your age.”
