Research orgs’s video celebrates a path: childhood scientific curiosity → lab visit → PhD. Missing: precarious contracts, rent worries, and career uncertainty as #postdoc. The inspirational story is shown, but it isn’t the reality many researchers face. #AcademicSky #IchBinHanna #ScienceAsAService

#Beamline scientist careers in #Germany need an honest discussion. 3-year temp contracts, #ScienceAsAService for others, little time for own research. Career progression is slow, permanent posts scarce, chances for a #professorship low. Structural constraints worth careful consideration. #WissZeitVG
Zielvereinbarungen? Nein.
Local contacting=service to other scientists at a #synchrotron is also not reflected by broken metrics. People who work in such jobs lose out in the tough academic career race. My hard lesson: don’t do #ScienceAsAService jobs as long #profs claim your productivity is not good. There is no fairness.
"Their intellectual ambitions are real, but the faculty outcry over Harvard’s proposed cuts reveals how dependent [#academia] has become on exploiting precarious graduate labour." #ichbinhanna #ScienceAsAService
The opinion addresses also lack of teaching of relevant skills for jobs outside academia
My CV states facts.
If you invite me to an interview, you accept my profile.
Rejecting me afterwards using metrics that are unfit for the role and not applied equally to all candidates constitutes a procedural failure and a waste of everyone’s time.

Shallow science is rewarded. Speed is only possible if you are insulated from structural toxicity: #WissZeitVG, #ScienceAsAService, temp contracts. A prof this year: „Who needs reproducibility in #academia? No one is paid for it“ That‘s the trade-off: fast, dirty output vs durable knowledge.
Non-permanent #ScienceAsAService roles in #academia are structurally toxic.
You advance other people’s careers. When they become professors, survivor bias kicks in and they judge you by the same distorted metrics.
Ignore their LinkedIn narrative. #academicSky #synchrotron #beamlinepostdoc
PIs rely on #ScienceAsAService postdocs at #synchrotron Fewer are willing to hire them into roles benchmarked against classical academic trajectories. The system isn't designed to reward this kind of work, even though modern research infrastructure depends on it #academicsky #ichbinhanna #WissZeitVG
Profs value service roles rhetorically, but discount service work quantitatively. As a #ScienceAsAService postdoc you can't compete with uni #postdocs on publications and grants, yet you will still be used extensively by PIs. This is structural bias, not individual failure. #academicsky #ichbinhanna
Hi, I am missing the point about sustainability for employees. Most #NFDI contributors are employed under #WissZeitVG. Given the #ScienceAsAService role, I wonder what are the long-term career options for staff within the #NFDI consortia? There are no Mittelbau positions. #ichbinhanna
To where should they progress? A permanent beamline scientist works for 30a. There is rarely any career development. #ScienceAsAService postdocs are evaluated worse than uni postdocs due to the imbalance for research. Consequently, service jobs should only be done by permanent staff.
Is the real question not: How many people working at universities move to good positions vs. people from #ScienceAsAService roles at #synchrotrons etc? #ichbinhanna
I did jobs in #ScienceAsAService roles for research orgs and university groups. There, I was actively prevented doing research during my paid working time. I did scientific software development for them, but when it came to publication, I was conveniently left out from the author list. #synchrotron
PS: Don’t be fooled by co-author papers. Professors only value first or last authorships. In #ScienceAsAService roles you stay in the middle. Time spent there is wasted for building your own research profile, grants, promotions, and long-term career. #academicsky #ichbinhanna #synchrotron
The hard lesson: never accept a temp #ScienceAsAService role at a #synchrotron or research org without protection. Require >50 % time for independent research. Publish and document work on #GitHub. Keep records. In asymmetric systems, credit and authorship are reassigned. #ichbinhanna #academicsky
The long-term cost is real. When you later apply to those groups, you are often seen as support staff, not a peer scientist. Repayment is rare. Labels stick, despite what those professors pretend. Service to others downgrades you in the very system it sustains. #ichbinhanna #ScienceAsAService
This is the two-faced part. The same professors who define the metrics benefit from your service. You enable their experiments, data, and papers, while your own record stagnates. Credit flows outward. The labor that makes science work remains invisible. #ScienceAsAService #academicsky
#ScienceAsAService jobs at a #synchrotron harm #academic careers. Local contact roles consume time needed for papers and grants. Career progression is defined by metrics set by professors (publications, funding, visibility) yet service work scores poorly against them. #ichbinhanna #academicsky
If you consider joining a consortium in German academia, pay attention to whether your work will remain visible. Too often, only PIs and their postdocs appear on LinkedIn, conferences, while those in #ScienceAsAService roles disappear from view. Visibility matters greatly. #ichbinhanna #WissZeitVG
In #synchrotron science #ScienceAsAService local contacting is not honored. Only first or last authorship count for hiring, even on temp position. Consequently, working on a temporary position where one supports external users is not helpful for the academic career. Time lost for own publications.
Calling a temporary job with no stated duration a golden opportunity is … bold.
Like Willy Wonka, but the contract evaporates when you open the wrapper. ✨🍫
