Northern route, 966 miles Trail report: From Willow to Rohn, it has been recently traveled and it should be as normal as ever. From Rohn to Nicolai, which is known to be ice and bare ground for much of the way, the teams should have a rare snow covered trail all the way. From Nicolai to Ruby on the Yukon, there is lots of snow. From Ruby to Kaltag on the Yukon, there is lots of snow. From Kaltag to Old Woman, there is lots of snow. Beyond Old Woman is the coast. The coast conditions can change at any time. The weather forecast: The start at Willow is calling for a dog friendly cooler temperature on March 8th. Cool morning but warm afternoon. From Skwentna to Rainy Pass, it should be -10f to 20f. From Rohn to the Mcgrath area, it should be -25f to 5f. So, to the 24 hour rest, it should be dog friendly conditions. Snow all the way and cooler temperatures for the dogs. The 2026 Iditarod has 34 teams and for the first time an expedition class of a reported three teams. With 34 teams entering, it's another extremely low number for Iditarod. There are 22 veterans and 12 rookies. 3 past Champions are in the competitive field and 1 past Champion in the expedition class. Including the 3 past Champions, there are 13 teams with a top ten finish. IMO, of the remaining 21 teams, there are 6 or 7 with a chance at a top ten finish. Historically, an average of 77 % of starters of Iditarod finish the race. As few as 58% and as high as 82% have finished. I will try and do a daily Iditarod my take leading up to the start. A short 7 days away.
