A stunning ultraviolet image captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows a solar filament erupting from the Sun's surface, creating a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The CME sent electrons and ions into the solar system, causing auroras on Earth. This event is a sign of the approaching solar maximum, promising more such spectacular displays in the coming years.

False-color composite image of the Sun in extreme ultraviolet light, showing a powerful M6.5 class solar flare (bright blue) erupting from active region AR 11719 on April 11, 2013 at 0711 UTC. The flare is accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME) directed towards Earth. The image highlights sunspots, loops of plasma tracing magnetic field lines, and the overall dynamism of the Sun nearing solar maximum.

A stunning ultraviolet image captures a solar filament erupting from the Sun's surface, creating a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The image showcases the immense power of the Sun, with bright loops of plasma visible around the active region. This event, observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, sent electrons and ions into the solar system, impacting Earth's magnetosphere and causing auroras. The eruption occurred during an unexpected time, amidst speculation about an unusual solar maximum.

Image of the Sun showing an exceptionally long solar filament, a dark streak of hot gas held aloft by the Sun's magnetic field, extending across a significant portion of the Sun's surface. Captured in hydrogen light, highlighting the chromosphere. This filament is longer than the Sun's radius, measuring over 700,000 kilometers.
