Observing Compact Population III Star Clusters and the Presence of Cosmic Streaming The formation of the Universe's first luminous stellar structures depends on the unique conditions at "Cosmic Dawn," which are set by the underlying cosmological model and early baryonic physics. Observations suggest that high-z star clusters reached stellar surface densities abo

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
Here’s what it would look like if every member were bright enough for the naked eye—seen from the Old Well on the UNC campus.
Gorgeous artwork by grad student Isabel López Murillo.
(A figure I’ll never get tired of.)

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
So what is this thing?
A vast, ≥500 pc-wide association containing tens of thousands of stars—including many previously “independent” groups.
We call it: The Greater Pleiades Complex.

Post image

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
The traceback is fascinating: these groups were closest to the Pleiades ≈80 Myr ago.
But the Pleiades age is ≈120 Myr.
We don’t think the age is wrong—we think the STRUCTURE broke apart ~80 Myr ago, likely after interacting with another molecular cloud.

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters
But is it real?
We checked multiple independent tests:
• Color–magnitude diagrams line up beautifully
• Abundances match the Pleiades—and don’t match the field
• And multiple substructures all trace back toward the same birthplace as the Pleiades core

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
Then we combined:
• Rotation-selected candidates
• Gaia positions & velocities
• Modern clustering tools
→ Result: a striking, coherent structure enveloping the Pleiades and stretching hundreds of parsecs (Figure 2 in the paper).

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
Stellar rotation encodes age.
Younger stars spin fast; older stars spin slowly.
Using TESS periods (video attached—gyrochronology 101!), we trimmed down the list of possible Pleiades relatives far more effectively than position/kinematics alone.

🧪🔭⭐ #starclusters #pleiades
Gaia has revolutionized cluster-finding (see great work by @emily.space and many others).
Our twist: combining Gaia with TESS rotations.
TESS is ~ all-sky and gives rotation periods for millions of stars—a powerful way to identify coeval populations.

A stunning image of the Heart Nebula (IC 1805) and the Soul Nebula in Cassiopeia. These emission nebulas, glowing red from energized hydrogen, are home to several young open star clusters. The image shows the vibrant colors and intricate details of these celestial objects, located approximately 6,000 light-years away and spanning 300 light-years. The nebulas' structures resemble a heart and soul, hence their nicknames.

A stunning deep-space image showcasing the open star clusters M46 (upper left) and M47 (lower right) in the Puppis constellation. M46, approximately 5,400 light-years away, is older and contains hundreds of stars, while the younger M47, at 1,600 light-years, is smaller and looser. Interestingly, the planetary nebula NGC 2438, a foreground object, is superimposed on M46, illustrating the vast distances and coincidental alignments in space.
