Text: The 2026 open enrollment season is ending, but early health insurance enrollment numbers only tell a partial story of this enrollment period. New analysis from the State Marketplace Network takes a look at preliminary enrollment data reported from the State-based health insurance Marketplaces (SBMs). Several SBMs indicate that early trends are a warning sign of more disenrollments in the months to come, while a significant number of those who remain enrolled have shifted from gold or silver to bronze plans, leaving many households more vulnerable to financial risk. The population of children and youth with chronic and complex needs continues to rise, and states continue to experience a reduced health care workforce in many areas, including pediatric primary and subspecialty care physicians, nursing, therapists, and direct care professionals. Recent projections indicate the distribution of pediatric sub-specialists does not align with need and demand. It is important to emphasise, however, that the motive for this policy decision should not be about destroying private healthcare institutions. Instead there should be deliberate collaboration. It is true that some private medical providers have overexploited the government medical aid for unjustified self-enrichment, and, in some cases, through fraud.
