Stuck in just a few inches of water, at the bottom of a deep-sided pit with a grate on top. He'd walked over the grate a few times before he noticed movement beneath it and realised what it was. Thank goodness he was able to reach them !

The wonderful season of serenading #frogs and #toads gathering at the moat and competing for prospective mates has began. Several try their luck at my back door which, of course, is also a good place to hide from the heron’s ferocious appetite. Nature is everything but kind.
There was quite a bit of wrestling prior to this coupling. The second male followed these two into the pond. Hoping his luck would change.

Finally! Living north of Inverness, I've been jealously watching posts from those further south and their amphibian encounters. Many of my local ponds still had ice last weekend. The first are finally emerging, though, and I saw this amorous toad pair a couple of days ago.
