Last of the unedited photography. I'll start over again tomorrow, posting the edited versions. And I hope to get some photos this week if the weather cooperates. Lots of plants in my garden are starting to bud. #uneditedphotography #tree #spring

New painting, I was inspired by @jedwardneill.bsky.social ‘s minimal use of color. Only 3 colors used(other than B&W), next time I’ll try only 2.

Scientists find where trees are planted matters more for climate One of the most popular strategies for fighting climate change has become planting billions of trees. Global initiatives, including the United Nations Environment Programme and the Trillion Tree Campaign, pledge to sequester trillions of tons of carbon dioxide by restoring worldwide forests. But a new study suggests that where trees are planted may be more important than how many trees get planted. While some advocates have said that as much as 1,000 million hectares could be reforested and absorb up to 750 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide, others have called for far smaller estimates. Most of these earlier studies have been based on simplified models or idealized conditions, which might not represent the real world. Scientists from ETH Zurich wanted to explore this concept with more realism. Their results show that replanting efforts in certain areas could deliver similar climate benefits while occupying vastly less land. Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) published the study after detailed simulations were processed on one of the university’s state-of-the-art supercomputers. Using an advanced climate model, the research team compared three scenarios for global reforestation. It looked not just at trees’ carbon absorption (the biochemical effect) but also how forests...

Love this beautiful beech #tree. It grew on the edge of this rock ledge & had to find its way through gritstone to get to the fertile ground. It stands tall over a path I walk most days. & When #life feels hard it reminds me, that forming deep #roots can feel like a struggle, but it's worth it.

How We Care For Monash Trees Trees are essential to what makes Monash a great place to live. They cool our neighbourhoods, improve air quality, make our streets more walkable and protect the garden character our community values. Caring for our trees is a longterm commitment and investment for Council, and one of our most significant community service areas. Why tree canopy matters As our city grows and the climate changes, tree canopy plays an increasingly important role in keeping Monash liveable. Shaded streets and parks help reduce urban heat, improve comfort on hot days and support biodiversity by providing habitat for birds and wildlife. We have a longstanding goal to increase tree canopy across the municipality, recognising that today's investment delivers benefits for decades to come. In 2024/25, we planted more than 140,000 trees and plants to grow Monash's urban forest and increase tree canopy, and we're working hard to do this again in 2026. This longterm investment helps reduce heat in our suburbs, supports biodiversity and ensures future generations benefit from leafy streets and green spaces. Looking after trees across Monash Council is responsible for managing trees in streets, parks, reserves, bushland areas and around community facilities. This work focuses on keeping trees healthy,...

Why are trees blooming early? If you love the sight of beautiful spring blossoms, you might have noticed that they’re blooming earlier than they used to. Science backs this up. By looking at records from the past 270 years, we can see that as the UK climate has warmed, trees like magnolias, cherries, plums and blackthorns are flowering up to a month earlier than they did in the 18th century. The shift isn't random. Early blossom is a record of climate change. What we're seeing is not just early beauty, but a warning system for ecosystems, agriculture and how our springs will look in the future. How do trees know when to flower? Flowering is a collection of seasonal cues: temperature, light and a plant's internal clock. Many temperate trees go dormant over winter. They need a stretch of winter cold to prompt them to wake up slowly, so that their buds don’t awaken too soon. As spring nears, warmth gradually builds up in what scientists call a ‘heat sum,’ prompting buds to grow and then bloom. Different species, and even different cultivars (plant varieties that humans have created within a species), may need different low or high temperatures in order to flower. Because these...
