Almost missed the 1300z broadcast from SAQ, and my laptop battery was dead, but I managed to charge it just a little so it died again after 3 minutes xD

This time I tried with my 5el LFA Yagi for FM, V-pol., and the signal was virtually inexistent... too little gain on VLF lol #SAQ #VLF

And here's how #VLF reception looked like on that small coax delta loop, just <3m circumference. The figure-of-8 pattern was apparent, and while there was no noise, signals weren't too strong either. #SAQ recorded ~18dB SNR on S3 signal vs S0 noise... crazy!

And Fldigi CW decoding failed, as usual.

The touchpad went hot, the air felt like a crying pan, and the antenna didn't really want to stand... but in the end I did hear the 100th anniversary message from #SAQ Grimeton Radio clearly & reliably 💯🥳👍🌼🐝 #VLF

Well, what do I expect... -102.99dBi @ 17.2kHz, -89.26dBi @ 42.5kHz, and -64.34dBi @ 225kHz.

Even worse if the Yagi was in H: -145.16dBi @ 17.2kHz, -127,16dBi @ 42.5kHz, -93.54dBi @ 225kHz... over 50dB drop-off 😱

#VLF theoretically looking not bad on my 5-element LFA Yagi for FM, except for excessive noise from Chayka navigation splattering above 100 kHz... but on a closer look, naZi ruZZian FSK on 18.1 is surprisingly weak, 23.4 DHO38 must be off, and I can't hear 24.0 NAA at all 😕

Not good for #SAQ...

Here's why...

MMANA-GAL calculates -123dB (!) gain @ 17.2 kHz for my terminated loop. Higher up, it scores -108dB @ 42.5 kHz (SAS2), and -79dB @ 225 kHz (Polish Radio 1).

Compare it with a simple 75cm, bottom-fed, non-terminated square loop: -103dB @ 17.2, -89dB @ 42.5, -64dB @ 225 kHz.

#SAQ is on conducting on-and-off tests on 17.2 kHz CW ahead of tomorrow's 100th-anniversary broadcasts @ 0900 & 1300z.

I'm hearing them just barely on a 246cm square terminated loop, aimed ~0deg, rather than ~340deg to Varberg/Grimeton.

Performance is a lot better at ~40 kHz.
