At the summit of Corno del Renon, a tall wooden flagpole rises into the sky, its red-and-white flag fluttering in the mountain wind. Below it, a weathered picket fence traces the ridge, framing the lookout like a quiet border between here and the vast beyond. Two hikers sit nearby, each absorbed in their own smartphone - perhaps messaging each other, perhaps someone far away. They seem unaware of the spectacular mountain panorama rising behind them.
And what a view it is: from right to left, the mighty Marmolada, the striking silhouettes of Sasso Piatto and Sassolungo, the dramatic plateaus of the Gruppo del Sella, and the jagged spires of the Gruppo delle Odle. Peaks carved by time, glowing under a brilliant alpine sky scattered with soft clouds.
