This is so relatable!
The worst part of the #writingprocess for me is getting the #firstdraft down before I "lose it"... 😏🤷🏽👍🏽

"Show don't tell" gets misquoted constantly.
What it actually means: don't tell the reader how to feel.
Show the thing that creates the feeling. Let them feel it themselves.
The emotion is the reader's job. The image is yours.

Your opening scene does three jobs:
1) Establishes whose story it is.
2) Creates a question the reader needs answered.
3) Shows the world before it breaks.
Most writers nail the first. Forget the second. Skip the third entirely.

The biggest mistake I see in complex plots:
Mistaking complexity for depth.
A complicated structure isn't deep. A character who must choose between two things they can't afford to lose — that's deep.
Simplify the structure. Deepen the stakes.

The prologue debate isn't really about prologues.
It's about trust.
Do you trust your reader to wait for context? Do you trust yourself to earn it?
The format isn't the problem. The execution is.
What's your rule for prologues?

Pacing isn't about speed.
It's about consequence density.
Every scene should change something. If it doesn't, cut it.
"Breathing room" is often code for a scene that hasn't earned its place.

Ocean sunrise and Annie Proulx quote: “What I find to be very bad advice is the snappy little sentence, 'Write what you know.' It is the most tiresome and stupid advice that could possibly be given. If we write simply about what we know we never grow.”

Maya Angelou and quote: "We write for the same reason that we walk, talk, climb mountains or swim in the ocean - because we can. We have some impulse within us that makes us want to explain ourselves to other human beings."
"Write what you know" gets misinterpreted constantly.
I think it means: write what obsesses you.
Research fills the gaps. Passion drives the story.
How do YOU interpret this advice?
RT if you've been told this and it helped. QRT if it didn't.

The physics forced the politics.
The politics forced the class war.
The class war forced the character arcs.
System design IS story design.
