Slaves Executed for the Nat Turner Revolt In the wake of Nat Turner’s rebellion, the backlash was swift and brutal. White militias, along with mobs of armed civilians, launched a ruthless campaign of revenge, targeting not only the rebels but also innocent Black people, many of whom had no involvement in the uprising. Over the course of the following weeks, up to 200 Black individuals were killed, often without trial or evidence of any rebellion-related activity. These killings were meant to instill fear and prevent further uprisings, but they also served as a warning to other enslaved people who might contemplate resistance. In addition to the mass executions, numerous enslaved individuals were subjected to severe punishment, and many others were terrorized into submission. This violent response highlighted the deep-seated fear among white Southerners of Black resistance and reinforced the institution of slavery through even more oppressive laws and practices.

8. Brutal Backlash – In retaliation, up to 200 Black people—many uninvolved in the rebellion—were killed by white militias and mobs.
