comic diary. Panel 1: As a kid I used to have a reocurring dream. Panel 2: it was a blank sheet of paper. around A4 in size. Panel 3: It was pristine, maybe slightly curved but smooth to the touch. Panel 4: sometimes the hand will start writing/drawing Panel 5: (different dream scene) but usually i’ll dream of something else. Panel 6: (different dream scene) but… Panel 7: (different dream scene) no matter the dream Panel 8~10: (fade to black with scritching noises Panel 9: (back to the paper, much messier now) I’ll always end up back here. Paper crumpled from pen pressure. nothing but scribbles. Panel 10: It wasn’t a nightmare But it was unsettling. I don’t remember when it stopped.

In June I handed in my notice. “I’m leaving in July” “Oh…” “It was a long time coming. My job didn’t suck but it didn’t spark joy. I was starting to get RSD and I didn’t trust that they would try to help.” (Visual of sewing) “But I’ll miss my colleagues.” (A colleague asks) “I heard you’re leaving. What made you decide?” I respond “death by a thousand cuts” while holding a jumper on my hands. “What made me decide?” I ask “hey could you get someone to remove the mould?” (Mouldy walls in the background) And off screen colleague says “we removed it!” I look behind me and it’s still there. “Um…” “There are only so many times I can complain about legitimate health concerns only to be lied to.

I meant to leave after a couple of years and now it’s been six.” I scratch my face sweating a little. “ it it’s time for a new chapter. And I’m starting to feel like dwelling on my problematic job is akin to picking any other mental scab. So what will I Julie the textile designer come comic artist do now?” “Well I have this friend in Rome I’ve meant to visit for years… so my plan…”
I am floating above a map with dots, a bike and a finish line. “Is to cycle from Frankfurt to Rome!” I’m sitting at a table wheeling a tiny bike. “This is not my first bike-packing stint. I cycled around the Baltic Sea after university.” I point at a map showing my route. Glasgow to Harwich, hook of Holland to Stockholm to Estonia then back to Dunkirk.
I stand in front of the map with a stick pointing towards Italy. “And I’m really interested in seeing what’s going on in this gap of countries I’ve never visited.” “So the plan is to leave in late august and get to Rome by early October.” I sit surrounded by loose comic pages. “I’m going to try to keep a comic diary as I travel so keep an eye out to read my adventure as they happen!
I’m going travelling late august! I’ll be posting daily once I leave.
