This Tuesday I will give my favourite lecture of the year on our Advanced #DevBiol course: The toolbox lecture - The Molecular Biology of the Cell in 1 hour. Each year this slide triggers me to think and refine the rationale - a fun task!
Really want to apply for this excellent PI cultivation program😍 You just need to know how many cool scientists, like @mads100tist.bsky.social , have grown out of it😆
Too sad I am not on #DevBiol nor #StemCell spectrum......🫠
You have a great, important and much needed initative (www.humanreproduction.uzh.ch/en.html) in an area that needs more attention and better funding. #HumanReproduction requires a bridge between #DevBiol and #Gynecology, as Bob Edwards built.
The passing of A. Garcia Bellido

means another pioneer of #DevBiol leaving the room. An impactful personality who could create an intellectual storm w/ a sentence.

New Review! #devbiol #bioelectricity #CellBiology #tissueregeneration
In our new @annualreviews.bsky.social piece, we explore how bioelectricity is generated, sensed & translated into responses that sculpt tissues, guide growth & enable tissue regeneration.

Thanks for following along. We hope this info can be used to improve IVF procedures to increase success rates for women of all ages. Please like/RT. @eshre.bsky.social #eshrejc @bwfund.bsky.social @hhmi.org #reproductivehealth #reproductivehealth #devbiol
Side hustle level-up! My book, IN THE BEGINNING, will be published by @harperonebooks.bsky.social in 2027! It's about the human embryo, how it gets built, and what it means for where we come from and where we're going.

Couldn’t have done this without Emilio’s hard work 🎉 Huge thanks to our amazing co-authors, collaborators, and @CIHR for supporting this fundamental research! #Zebrafish #Fibroblast #CellMigration #Chemoattraction #DevBiol 8/8

Ok nerds, let's have fun. Thought experiment: NASA asks @socdevbio.bsky.social to provide a single image to be shot into space to tell the universe about #devbiol. Just one image. What is it? Waddington's landscape? Antennapedia? Spemann/Mangold's two-headed tadpole? What? Respond and RT, pls.
Our paper finally got published @NatureComms rdcu.be/euofX. It was an interesting and fascinating journey with @RobertJHuebner1, @ThirumalaiArmy,

We're #hiring! Our group in the Cell Bio Dept at Hopkins is looking for a Research Technologist to join us and study #neuralcrest #cellmigration during #devbiol! Looking to build up your lab experience? Check it out! @socdevbio.bsky.social @ascbiology.bsky.social

Pay attention #devbiol! The firing of the NICHD director directly impacts our work. NIAID and others are known political hot topics, so changes at NICHD are getting far less attention. Make sure people know what the NICHD is and why it matters!

Another great piece of #devbiol writing here. Part Two of Three in the @nytimes.com series, The Embryo Question. Cue rage about the marketing of Preimplantation genetic testing.

Wow. Two days in a row of great #devbiol writing.

Great bit of #devbiol writing here!

Recently, thanks to Todd’s book, and articles from the science world and the art world alike, Merian is coming back to prominence. Now #devbiol should claim her as a pioneer, too. It took awhile, but as she once wrote: “Patience is a very beneficial little herb.” 15/15.
Merian lived long before Janni Nuslein-Vollhard or Nettie Stevens, so it's fascinating to consider that the very first #devbiol might’ve been done on insects and by women. Silk was invented in China 3000 years ago & the breeding and rearing of silkworms was done by women. 9/15

Welcome to Episode Four of the #LongBibliography, where I tell stories of #devbiol history and the lengths we will go to do science. Today we learn about the pioneering insect developmental biologist, Maria Merian. Kim Todd tells her story in a great book, Chrysalis 2/15

As we Stand Up for Science today, let's all stay focused on why we do what we do. My lab does #devbiol because birth defects are the single most lethal and most expensive diseases in American kids. 🧵👇
If you currently live & work in a country outside of Europe / the US and are thinking of making the leap to your first independent position, you might be eligible to reach a global audience with your #devbiol research.

The embryologist Ernst Haeckel is famous for his maxim that “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” and for sketchy imaging. While Haeckel figures prominently in #DevBiol, the Fifth Dalai Lama doesn’t. Perhaps he should, though. He scooped Haeckel by about 200 years.

So, everyone knows the story about the time the 5th Dalai Lama wrote the Editor to complain that Ernst Haeckel hadn’t cited his work from 200 years earlier? Right? Right?

Someone in 1st Century India got human embryonic limb development perfectly right. The progressive emergence of parts, even the timing, exactly right. Today, I'll start a new thing about the ancient origins developmental biology, the science of embryos. 🧵1/15 #TheLongBibliography
