Galatians 5:4 (NKJV): You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

The Greek word translated “become estranged from” means “to be entirely idle”. It can also be translated “destroy”. There are things we say and do because we try to justify our actions to those around us. What they are can differ from person to person and be dependent on the situation. There is no one thing we can point to say that is what is breaking community with Jesus results from. For most of us, it a pattern of selfish behavior. We act the way we want to act, then we go looking for things to back us up. We twist ourselves to fit an image we have created, not the one God created. When we do these selfish things, they destroy the bonds of the relationships we have with others and with Jesus. When we act out of vain conceit, we put up blockades to the work of the Holy Spirit in us and through us. Instead, we should be doing the things each day that strengthen our relationship with Jesus. We should be doing the things that sacrificial love calls us to do. We should be living the way that Jesus demonstrated for us. We should be living a life that is dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit. Today, may we cease the things that destroy and start living out the Gospel of Jesus that brings eternal life to us and those around us.

James 1:18 (NKJV): Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

The Greek word that is translated “firstfruits” means “a beginning of sacrifice”. The way that we are usually taught what a sacrifice is alludes to things needing to die. When we hear the word sacrifice, we think about the death of something. But what if we are viewing sacrifice wrong? What if sacrifice does not require that something die? What if sacrifice does require something to live? What if instead of seeing a life of faith built on Christ Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit as requiring the cessation of things, but instead we view it as the beginning of things? Our God is an active God. Our God is an intentional God. We were designed to live our lives like Jesus. Say that again with me: We were made to LIVE like Jesus. Jesus lives, so that we may fully live. Jesus loves, so that we may fully love. Jesus brings wholeness, so that we can bring wholeness into other’s lives. We are first fruits when we learn to live a life that puts the Gospel first. We are first fruits when we let agape love guide our actions. We are first fruits when we offer forgiveness and peace to others instead of condemnation. Today, let us fully live out a life of faith in Christ Jesus, so that God is glorified and others are able to find wholeness.

Job 37:23 (NKJV): As for the Almighty, we cannot find Him; He is excellent in power, in judgment and abundant justice; He does not oppress.

I always use caution when I talk about the verses from Job that are from Job’s friends. I have come to learn over the years, that the things that the friends say may sound good, but they are usually not fully aligned with who the LORD the God is. So, when I read today’s verse and put it in context, I was reminded to tread lightly. The Hebrew word that is translated “oppress” means “to depress”. In the KJV, it is mostly translated “afflict”. I think in all his words, that Elihu actually stumbles across a truth that we forget: God is not a dealer of affliction. Yes, God has power, but God is the one who works towards justice. God is the one who works things towards love and mercy. God is the one who works things towards wholeness. Today, may we allow the work of the LORD our God in our lives to lead us to that love and wholeness that are so freely offered us.
