#Collapse Likelihood: 40% probability of widespread #dieback if warming reaches 2.0^{C}.
Trigger: Combined #deforestation exceeding 22% and regional rainfall reduction of 30%.
Impact Mechanism: Release of up to 90 billion tons of #carbon, potentially adding 0.3^{C} to #global warming.

The #pre-print for the Australian #fieldwork we did last February is now out! We show snow gum #dieback alters #volatile emissions, especially increasing #monoterpene #emissions from damaged trunks. You can read more here: doi.org/10.22541/ess...
The fieldwork sure was one to remember! 🌿🪲☁️🦘

Dieter´s interdisciplinary research into the causes of large-scale #forest #dieback in forests on the islands of #Hawai´i throughout the 1970s and 80s had a global impact and can be seen as exemplary for modern multi-causal forest #decline #research. Context: muse.jhu.edu/pub/5/articl...
March 1972: Hawai´i, Island of Kaua´i, Alaka´i Swamp area. Aerial photograph of forest dieback. Dying and dead Metrosideros trees stand out in grey against the few remaining healthy, green trees. Note on slide: `Terminal dieback, Alaka´i, March 1972`. Photo by Dieter Mueller-Dombois. The Alakaʻi Swamp (Alakaʻi Wilderness Preserve) is a montane rainforest on the island of Kaua´i in Hawai´i, located on a plateau near Mount Waiʻaleʻale, one of the wettest places on Earth. Although it is called a swamp, it is actually a rainforest.
Prof. Mueller-Dombois has been studying #forest #dieback in the Hawaiian #Islands since the late 1960s. This aerial photograph was taken during a reconnaisance flight over the dieback area in #Alaka´i Swamp, Kaua´i, in March 1972. Photo by D. M.-D.. Context: www.google.de/books/editio...

Symposium description:
Missed the symposium on #forest #dieback at the ESA last year? Would you like to revist the presentations by experts in the field throughout Australia? The symposium was sponsored by the Natural Resource Commission of NSW amd is now available on their webpage: www.nrc.nsw.gov.au/forest-dieback.

With an excess of #ash to cut in the #woods due to #dieback we have plenty of logs to sell but first they season to meet Govn’t set standards of dryness. With all the cutting, collecting, stacking, chopping and restacking I reckon we handle wood 8-10 times before it’s burnt….saves going to the gym!
