A wildflower survived a historic megadrought. Scientists now think they know how | CNN Wild scarlet monkeyflowers in California survived a historic drought by relying on a rapid evolution, marking the first time the process has been observed in the wild.

Once Thought Extinct, Scientists Are Revealing the Secrets of This Elusive and "Adorable" Mammal A new study sheds light on the hidden lives of coastal marten. Researchers at Oregon State University have sharpened the picture of one of the West Coast’s most elusive mammals: the coastal marten. About the size of a ferret, this small forest carnivore was nearly wiped out in the 20th century as trapping and logging devastated its numbers. To learn where the species still survives, scientists from OSU’s Institute for Natural Resources carried out a three month field study in 2022 across 150 square miles (388 square kilometers) east of Klamath in northern California. Instead of capturing animals, the team relied on noninvasive tools, using hair snares and remote cameras to document martens and the habitats they use. The genetic results showed 46 martens in the study area, including 28 males and 18 females. The animals turned up across the landscape, but they were most common in two very different settings: high forested ridgetops with reliable winter snowpack, and lower elevation ravines and riparian corridors in coastal forests. A Species Still at Risk The results provide valuable information for conservation and land management planning related to the coastal marten, a member of the weasel family also known as the Humboldt...

The issue is twofold:
- Too much synthetic (fossil fuel) and livestock (ammonia) nitrogen
- No enough nitrogen fixing bacteria left

This is a good talk about how the #IPCC gets #nitrogen and CO2 land sinks wrong. But the talk also gets science wrong. It's NOT just legumes that form symbiotic relationships with nitrogen fixing bacteria, like mentioned in the talk. All plants do this.

These Marsupials Were Thought Extinct for 6,000 Years. Scientists Found Them Alive in Remote Rainforest With no trace for 6,000 years, scientists presumed two marsupial species extinct. But, surprise! All this time, the creatures have been living in the remote rainforests of Western New Guinea, away from the hustle and bustle. The details of the discovery, published in Records of the Australian Museum, revealed that the identified marsupials were pygmy long-fingered possums (Dactylonax kambuayai) and the ring-tailed glider (Tous ayamaruensis). Both marsupials, now categorized under the Lazarus species, were found living in the remote rainforests on the Vogelkop Peninsula of New Guinea. Animals belonging to the Lazarus taxon 'appear' to come back from their presumed death, living healthy lives despite being considered extinct. Such species are only recorded in fossil history, which makes the 'rediscovery' even more thrilling. "The discovery of one Lazarus taxon, even if thought to have become extinct recently, is an exceptional discovery," lead researcher Tim Flannery, an Australian Museum Distinguished Visiting Fellow, said in a statement. "But the discovery of two species, thought to have been extinct for thousands of years, is remarkable," he added. The pygmy long-fingered possum has bold stripes on its fur that make it stand apart. That isn't the only unique feature that the tiny marsupial possesses...

Our extinct Australopithecus relatives may have had difficult births Childbirth was difficult and dangerous for our ape-like ancestors, much as it is for women today. A new study of the pelvises of Australopithecus suggests that labour exerted powerful forces on their pelvic floors – meaning Australopithecus mothers risked perineal tearing. “We show that Australopithecines are quite similar to modern humans,” says Pierre Frémondière, a midwife at Aix-Marseille University in France. “If they had lots of deliveries, probably they would have a greater risk of pelvic floor disorder.” For modern humans, vaginal childbirth requires a lot of force, as a large-headed baby is forced through a relatively narrow pelvis. One region that is prone to damage is the pelvic floor, a sheet of muscles that links the left and right halves of the pelvis. Many women tear their pelvic floor during labour, and it’s been estimated that 1 in 4 women experience pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence or organ prolapse. Frémondière and his colleagues wanted to find out if similar difficulties afflicted our extinct ancestors. They focused on Australopithecus, which lived in Africa between about 2 million and 4 million years ago. These early hominins walked upright but were also still adapted to spend time in trees, and may...

Two New Marsupials Discovered in New Guinea Were Thought to Have Been Extinct for 6,000 Years Scientists have described an exciting discovery: two marsupials that modern science thought to be extinct are still alive in the rainforests of western New Guinea. The discovery is all the more amazing once you learn these were supposed to have gone extinct 6,000 years ago. Both were known from fossil or subfossil remains on the Vogelkop Peninsula, in what is now Indonesian Papua. And both lived in a landscape that is still biologically rich, yet poorly surveyed and increasingly pressured by logging and agricultural expansion. Mammals are among the best-studied animals on Earth, but the new study shows how even mammals can remain overlooked in undersurveyed forests and in museum collections. “The discovery of one Lazarus taxon, even if thought to have become extinct recently, is an exceptional discovery,” Professor Tim Flannery, co-author of both studies, said. “But the discovery of two species, thought to have been extinct for thousands of years, is remarkable.” Two Lazarus Species A Lazarus species is an animal or plant species that is rediscovered after being presumed extinct. The term comes from Lazarus, the biblical figure raised from the dead. Both new marsupials fit that description. The first animal, the pygmy long-fingered possum, Dactylonax kambuayai,...

Environmental groups, biologists oppose endangered species bill This story was originally produced by the New Hampshire Bulletin, an independent local newsroom that allows NHPR and other outlets to republish its reporting. Whether they are spotted on private property or public land, wild animals and data about them cannot be “owned,” conservationists said at a Tuesday hearing. “I think I have the right … to both enjoy wildlife as a public resource, and have it continue to exist on my property and my neighbor’s property,” Drew Stevens, a wildlife rehabilitator based in Nottingham, told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Stevens was commenting on House Bill 1603, a proposal from Rep. Sayra DeVito that seeks to add new requirements for how state agencies assess the presence of endangered and threatened species on private property. The bill proposes that wildlife data must be collected with documented landowner permission to be usable, something that conservationists said could negate previous records or complicate future data collection. State agencies use a database on the distribution of threatened and endangered species in New Hampshire to review applications for development and make recommendations, officials said in January. That database includes biologist-verified reports from both agency staff and the public. It does not...
