During the ensuing battle, when Constantine squirrels Shazam away to parts unknown, she joins her magical counterparts in JLD stating “...its a safe bet that when John Constantine wants you to do something, you do the opposite” so what are the origins of this complex relationship between these two? They met in mid-80’s issues of Hellblazer, their interactions were largely professional, often teaming up for magical crises, but there were hints of flirtation and trust. By the late 80’s it was fully established that Zatanna was one of the few people Constantine genuinely trusts. 1999’s Hellblazer #161 and subsequent issues explore a near-romantic encounter, with Zatanna wary of Constantine’s self-destructive tendencies. In Paul Dini’s Zatanna #11 & #12 from 2010 there is a scene where Zatanna almost confronts her feelings for him but walks away, leaving the relationship unresolved. The New 52 storyline largely downplayed their romantic history to focus on professional interactions.
