Come to the AMTA's coffee hour and hang out to talk shop or anything you'd like! #iTeachPhysics #modphys I will be there to meet you all this Saturday!
Holiday greeting from AMTA. "We wish you a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!"
To our modeling community: You’re the spark that makes science come alive. By trading "telling" for modeling, you gift students the power to think for themselves. Thank you for all you do! #ModelingInstruction #ScienceTeachers #STEMEducation #HappyHolidays #Modphys #Modchem #modbio #modsci
My favorite physics lab! #iteachphysics #modphys
Photo of whiteboard with instructions for how to approach the stations (identify system, draw and annotate diagrams, etc) and reminders of equations from previous experiments (Newton's 2nd Law, Fg = mg).
Force sensor attached to small cardboard box with a string. Pink task card with instructions for the station. Motion detector.
Two version of the same station. A pink task card along with a force sensor.
A track propped up as a ramp using some various physics textbooks. Pink task card. Blue spring scale. Red PASCO cart with mass labeled on it. Motion sensor.

Day 60 Physics - Translational Equilibrium Torque Quiz. Always meant to be an easy one but almost never see a bell curve. Ss either get 100% or barely pass. Start with 5 minutes of friends w/o pens which I learned from #modphys ppl like @msruggerio.bsky.social #iteachphysics #teach180
Physics teacher friends: there was a website I've used in the past to create motion maps from my inputs. I swear I had it bookmarked but cannot find. Help? 🎢 #modphys
Hey there physics 🎢🍎 teacher friends! If you teach AP physics 2 or C E&M or have an Electricity & Magnetism component to your intro class, and want some well-tested strategies & moves for teaching E&M, Kris Newton and I are running a weekly online #modphys E&M class for teachers
This one-week workshop focused on using energy as a unifying theme to bridge different areas of science education through modeling.
#TeachPhysics #ModPhys
Looking forward to another week of Modeling! 17 Middle School and High School Science Educators (8 from American Samoa!) will be spending the next week at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, learning how to model the topic of Energy across the sciences!

High School Teachers learning Modeling methods and participating in a whiteboard discussion.
Just wrapped up our 2-week Modeling Mechanics Workshop at @UNOmaha! 🎓 Teachers from NE, FL, MS & PA explored hands-on physics through Modeling Instruction. Whiteboarding, collaboration, & even a Ringo Starr concert made it unforgettable! 🧪🎶 #ModPhys #TeachPhysics #UNOmaha #UNOPhysics
Is there a more affordable (Amazon) alternative to the capacitors sold through #Pasco #CASTLE curriculum? (0.1 F) Electrolytic, bipolar, 10 V capacitor @joemilliano.bsky.social @the-physics-well.net #iteachphysics #modphys
A lot of the early discussion aligns well with the #modphys approach to forces and even the #modchem gas particle model. He gets accurate weights for flying quadcopters and paper airplanes and talks about why a ball thrown over the scale does NOT register on it.
Bonus: explains how load cells work!
Science teachers looking for high quality summer PD that's worth your time, check this link. And physics folks, you can take an E&M workshop with Kris Newton and me (which of course you want to do that) 🍎🎢 #modphys

Ahhhhh why do I always forget to tag 🎢🍎 #modphys
Right?! I, too, see more students giving up quicker. Ninth graders are proving tough to pull along through Modeling Instruction activities, in particular. #modphys #iTeachPhysics
On the upside, a former student is using the quote in her graduation speech because it resonated so strongly.
Join me and the amazing Kris Newton for a #modphys E&M workshop this July! It's online, so you can join from anywhere. Great for building understanding at a level needed for AP Phys 2 or AP Phys C or anyone who teaches E&M and likes thinking and learning
Can anyone recommend a book on the history of chemistry (or physics) from a non-European perspective? #ChemSky #iTeachChem #modChem #iTeachPhysics #modPhys #PhysicsSky

To be transparent - I believe we've been making constant minor changes to improve the curricula but the overarching #modphys "bedrock" is evidence-based & solid, so shouldn't need much change - but I worry that makes us appear "set in our ways." (IMO: fair - but these are good ways!) #ITeachPhysics
(and to be clear, there was no push for us to move away from #modphys) Has anyone else received pushback for not making big changes over 5+ yr timescales? If the curricular bedrock is solid, is there any benefit from making big changes? #iTeachPhysics
We use the AMTA's #modphys curriculum for 9th grade Physics as our framework. In my opinion it's solid. We've made tweaks, rearranged the order of units, etc., but on the whole I feel the backbone of the curriculum is solid and doesn't *need* major revision...

Most reacted well to feedback and solutions improved. Working individually made my job tougher but I felt I owed it to kids to give them an individual experience just before a test.
However, I continue to struggle keeping some focused. How do y'all do it? Note: 9th grade #ModPhys
Whiteboard that says Problem #1, by Cece & Sofia. Second line is an equation, "net force equals lift force minus gravitational force equals mass times acceleration." Third line "reads net force equals mass times acceleration." Fourth line reads "net force equals 4600 * 2, or 9200 N." Solution continues until board reads "lift force equals 54280 N."
End of unit whiteboarding continues to be my fav time to give feedback on *how* to document a solution, unlike earlier in the modeling cycle, when I'm focused on the *what*.
To day, we worked individually b/c test is soon. Problems were low to medium challenging. I went board-to-board. #ModPhys
