Last weekend at #CATE2026 in Los Angeles—connecting with California teachers and sharing The Strongest Books You Can Buy! See why librarians love our service and trust our bindings to stand up to years of classroom use. → tinyurl.com/4debjf5a #NCTE #ELA #englishteacher

English and literacy educators (any grade!), of any books published in the past five-ish years, I’m curious which you would love to teach and why. If you didn’t have to worry about any standards, state testing, etc., what books would you teach? #ELA #ELAteaching #teacher #NCTE #literature #literacy

Layers of annotation!

1. Pull a 🔥 line from The Metamorphosis.

2. Circulate and annotate with detailed observations on diction + connections to other works we’ve read.

3. Return a week later with post its abd 2/3 of The Death of Ivan Ilych read to annotate intertextual connections .

In Defense of Paper And these days, when my students’ physical proximity to each other and their teachers is more tightly controlled, I can still provide a space for physical proximity to their ideas: the ink and pape…

With all the talk about technology, blue books, process and product, it took me back to this 2020 piece I published on Moving Writers: "In Defense of Paper"

Maybe a refreshing weekend read!

A survey class that asks students to reflect on John Proctor's lines about his name, and how it applies to them.

A survey class that asks students to reflect on John Proctor's lines about his name, and how it applies to them.

I love this concluding question on my end-of-semester survey.

It never fails to uncover new things to learn about the young people I teach, even as we're getting ready to move on to other courses.

Their candor and heart leave me smiling.

High school ELA teachers: Do you prefer your class to be called “English” or “English Language Arts”? What are the connotations of each for you? What is gained or lost in either label?

And finally, knowing both of these things, I hope students will come away with a renewed determination to create a world where every person is valued and treated with dignity. #ncte #orbispictus #picturebooks

Meta shuts down global accounts linked to abortion advice and queer content More than 50 organisations report sites being restricted or removed, with abortion hotlines blocked and posts showing non-explicit nudity triggering warnings

Kidlit community, why, oh, why are we still using Meta platforms for organizing? I'd love to join an #NCTE panel, but I'm not going back on any Meta platform for any reason. They are already complying with blocking queer content and abortion related resources.

It was nice meeting everyone at #NCTE and #LRA. It was an interesting conference season to say the least. I will follow up soon with more on my podcasts and series after I close out the semester.

One of the highlights of #NCTE was sharing about the new Democracy & Literature collection from Sphere. And, catching up with many English teachers/Sphere alumni! Shoutout to our Sphere alum who presented with my colleague Kobi on the topic. #TeacherSphere

NCTE 2025: Teachers Want More Than the Same Old Books A recent NCTE survey shows educators overwhelmingly value diverse literature—but need help getting it into classrooms.

A vast majority of teachers view inclusive literature as important and want to use these books with their students. That’s according to a recent #NCTE survey, which offers insight into how books are used in U.S. classrooms and the challenges teachers face in integrating texts to enhance learning.
