This was an entirely new topic for Luke. Clyde was the only Black person Luke had ever known on a personal basis. There just weren’t that many Black people in Hawaii. He wondered if he’d said anything offensive without intending to do so. He remembered that once he’d asked Clyde if Black people tanned if they spent time in the sun. He remembered that Clyde had laughed and told him that he’d worked outdoors one summer and had gotten “as black as a plum.” He hadn’t seemed offended. With generosity, he’d understood that, like a child, Luke still lived in a pretty bubble of ignorance.
