A spiral staircase goes up the cream coloured interior of the tower.
Today I visited Souter Lighthouse. This was the first lighthouse in the world designed and built to us electric lighting. When completed in 1871 it initially used a carbon arc light. This was very bright but required a lot of maintenance as the carbon electrodes regularly needed changing.

Souter Lighthouse, Souter Point, Whitburn Colliery.
Souter Lighthouse and Fog Horn. Lizard Point, Whitburn Colliery. Built in 1871 by Henry Norris, AC electric powered the lamp, a world first. Decommissioned in 1988, it is a vistor attraction today.
