black background, white text. The winds were blistering hot in the summer sun and the droning on from the priest made Sky want to commit a crime. They groaned to themself as they felt the sweat dripping down their spine. The hair on their neck soaked. Who the fuck thought a funeral at noon during the hottest expected day of the season was smart? “He was a model citizen, son, and student…” Bullshit. They only care now cause he’s dead. It was all horrible. The fact that they were at a funeral for one of their partners was rough enough, but a funeral that they had to watch from sixty feet away because they weren't allowed to be there? Even worse. Sky wanted to fucking lose it. They wanted to scream, and shout and cry, to tell them that they all failed him. That they are denying him peace by keeping him away from the ones who loved him. Sky fanned themself with the service program. It was printed on cheap paper with his high school graduation photo. A tight hand met their arm as their other partner stood with them. Eddie's chocolate brown eyes never left the casket. The tears were mostly dry now, just older streaks and dark circles under his eyes. Unlit cigarette in his mouth. His dark brown curls pulled back into a low ponytail. Sky fanned him with their paper, they could see the sweat dripping down his neck. The two wore their black leather jackets (mistake) over their button up shirts. They tried to be respectful with their outfits, something that was not obscene, but still them; Still punk. They technically weren't at the funeral anyways, if anyone asked.

Sky wasn't going to let that motherfucker dictate their goodbyes. Fucking asshole. Different glances from students from the high school, teachers, people around town that were nosy and curious. Sky saw the red hair of his stepsister and all of her little friends around her. As the ceremony ended, Sky knew it was going to hurt as he was lowered into the ground. Insides churning and twisting. They wanted to scream and shout. Puke. Run as far away as they could. Fuck this town. Fuck these people. Eddie must have sensed their distress as he curled his arm around their waist and held them tight against his side. Hip to hip, chest to chest. Heart to heart. “Just breathe” he whispered. His own voice hoarse from all the crying this last week. “You breathe!” Sky hissed back and his eyes met theirs, warning them. They pursed their lips, “Sorry, baby. Just on edge” Sky pressed their forehead into his to apologize for their aggression. “I understand completely. It's the fuckin worst. I want to just disappear. Or get wasted” Eddie chuckled. Sky snorted at that idea. Wasted. If only they still drank. Eddie lit his cigarette and inhaled it like it was all he had left. “Can we get high after this?” “Yeah, let's get fucked tonight”

Sky wondered why they all showed up when they all ditched Billy when their relationship ended up exposed. When he started getting called a freak and queer in town. When his Dad found out and threatened to kill the two of them. Callused fingertips wiped away stray tears on Sky's cheeks. They didn't even realize that they had started to cry again. The tightness in their throat hurt, hoarse voice, feeling like they were suffocating. They shook while they tightened their grip on Eddie's waist. “Hey you fucking gay shits aren't supposed to be here!” One of the shittier basketball players said as they walked by as if looking for a fight. “Fuck off, Carver” Eddie hissed at him, arm tightening around Sky's shoulder. Jason scowled at the two. A few of his team behind him. Cocky kid now that Billy was out of the way and Steve graduated months before. Sky's eyes stayed on him. A glare so dark it made them all shiver. They didn't move when Jason stomped up and got in their face. “What? You two gonna fight me right here? Insane enough to put hands on someone at a funeral. Fuckin freaks,” Carver sneered. Sky thought about it. More than anything would they love to beat his ass one more time. But they were the adults now. Not a kid able to cause problems without going to jail.
