#TheOuterLimits Novella #1 "The Zanti Misfits" (01-Sep-97).
Now onto the part of this walkthrough I've been dreading. 12 novellas written by John Peel. Lord above save me. The first one is actually a novelisation of the famous but somewhat overrated TV ep #1.14 (30-Dec-63).
Review: soon.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.18 cont'd.
One of the eps used in the clipshow is from a future ep namely TV ep #6.04 "In Another Life" (16-Feb-98). Season 5 is short at 18 eps so i presume some eps were held over till Season 6. Not that I care to find out but I suspect so.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.18 cont'd.
Eps in the clipshow:
TV ep #3.03 "Blood Brothers" (07-Apr-95)
TV ep #3.21 "The Voice of Reason" (20-Aug-95)
TV ep #4.15 "Afterlife" (19-May-96)
TV ep #5.04 "Last Supper" (31-Jan-97)
TV ep #5.06 "Dark Rain" (14-Feb-97)
TV ep #5.11 "New Lease" (21-Mar-97)
#TheOuterLimits TV #5.18 "A Special Edition" (25-Jul-97).
Last ep of S5.
S3 ended with a clipshow and so does S5. I like their occasional clipshow eps as they do try to interlink various plots which requires using imagination because TOL is an anthology show of otherwise unrelated episodes.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.17 cont'd.
Dear me nothing in this ep worked. The gated community part wasn't irrelevant. The community folk were badly acted assholes. OMG these suburban Yanks would be first to surrender to aliens.
The barrier FX was sooo Canadian TV sci-fi, lamentable visual storytelling.
#TheOuterLimits TV #5.17 "Feasibility Study" (11-Jul-97).
Remake of the original TV ep #1.29 "A Feasibility Study" (13-Apr-64).
Despite starring that stalwart of 1960s TOL David McCallum I hated this ep. All of it.
OK the original was clumsy but also special, this a horrible looking production.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.16 cont'd.
I have to laugh as all late 1990s Canadian/USA TV sci-fi when it imagines the 2020s global power structure in the military/space set up has USA, Russian and Britain at the top. Like they think Britain will be in charge?!! Where's China, India, Brazil, the EU et al?
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.16 "Bodies of Evidence " (20-Jun-97).
This is a thematic sequel to TV ep #3.15 "The Voyage Home" (30-Jun-95) and I think that earlier ep is referenced.
I guessed the final twist and the script lands it well.
Jennifer Beals is in this and 1997 Beals is 🔥🔥🔥.
Very strong ep.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.15 cont'd.
By the way I always check IMDB after these eps. So a special messages to the cockwomble reviewers on IMDB who call this masterpiece the worst ep ever and being stolen from "The Tommyknockers", namely "viperjc" and "rsadtler", you two are absolute illiterate cretins.
#TheOuterLimits TV 5.15 cont'd.
This adapts the Stephen King short story "The Revelations of 'Becka Paulson" (19-Jul-84). And if you are watching this ep you can tell it was Stephen King's precursor story to his latter "The Tommyknockers" (11-Nov-87).
But like this TV ep is fanstastic for O'Hara.
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.15 "The Revelations of 'Becka Paulson" (06-Jun-97).
A very moving ep with the recent death of Catherine O'Hara. O'Hara plays a downtrodden housewife who has just shot herself in the brain by accident. Her performance is a masterpiece frankly. This is unmissable TV.
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.14 "Music of the Spheres" (09-May
-97).
Leaden and insipid even though the premise is a good idea but the show fails thoroughly to land.
A young Kirtsen Dunst elevates it but Joshua Jackson gives a bored performance. More his "Dawson Creek" level than his #Fringe level.
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.13 "Dead Man's Switch" (04-Apr-97).
This doomsday bunker ep is a bit of a masterpiece in terms of direction and pacing. Great ep overall...until the end that's just serviceable. The show's budget limitations worked in its favour here.
#DoctorWho Yee Jee Tso guests.

#TheOuterLimits TV 5.12 cont'd.
Why is the US army letting them in and them letting them fly off in the spaceship? Like it's so silly. They'd all be imprisoned.
The writers should've gone with something mysterious and intriguing but a 1970s seeded humanity idea is a lame dated idea for 1997.
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.12 "Double Helix" (28-Mar-97).
I liked the sci-fi idea as it felt like a modern version of TV ep #1.05 "The Sixth Finger" (14-Oct-63).
A young and very podgy Ryan Reynolds was wasted.
However the reveal maybe should've gone supernatural instead of generic sci-fi bobbins.
#TheOuterLimits TV ep #5.11 "New Lease" (21-Mar-97).
This ep about life after death science had a fairly straightforward trajectory and that tinny Canadian sci-fi incidental music was back to drag it down.
Saying that the cast tried hard to elevate it.
I didn't even recnognise Jason Priestley!
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
The final story adapts TV ep #1.32 "The Forms of Things Unknown" (04-May-64). I learned this ep was a failed backdoor pilot. But really it's just weird without a solid narrative to ground it so a poor choice to novelise. It's so atypical and not very good.
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
Diane Duane writes "The Voyage Home". It has no whales. She sidesteps the TV ep failing that the aliens should've remained a #Quatermass like psychological threat but we got those silly giant bugs. Thankfully Duane mostly hides that part.
And Dorn's acting.
#SteveRandall TV 1.01
Now seen Olive Deering in:
#TalesOfTomorrow #1.11 "Search for the Flying Saucer" (09-Nov-51)
#Suspense #4.18 "The Spider" (15-Jan-52) & #4.29 "Black Panther" (08-Apr-52)
#OneStepBeyond #1.16 "The Burning Girl" (05-May-59)
#TheOuterLimits #1.14 "The Zanti Misfits" (30-Dec-63)
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
Both prisoners are virgins which, an odd inclusion. The pic shows 38 yo Robert Patrick who played Skokes and like I can get past the Native American change but a virgin?
The native stuff does tie-in so adds a layer which is all any novelisation can hope for.
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
I do cringe when a US writer injects American Native culture especially in the 1990s. So I do hope Phoebe Reeves has life experience of that culture.
Skokes is reimagined as an native and even speaks the language. He's also got weird stuff in his backstory.
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
Adapts the famous TV ep #3.13 "Quality of Mercy" (16-Jun-95). I had thought from Diane Duane's stories in the first two volumes that the remit was to just do the TV story straight but here the writer Phoebe Reeves reimagines Brad Wright's character Skokes.
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation 3 cont'd.
The first story reprints the source for TV ep #2.09 "I, Robot" (14-Nov-64) & its remake #3.18 "I Robot" (23-Jul-95) which was written by Earl & Otto Binder in "Amazing Stories" (Jan-39).
The OG story is a solid Frankenstein style and distinct from both TV eps.
#TheOuterLimits Novelisation #3 (19-Mar-97).
Another 4 TV eps novelised:
TV ep #2.09 "I, Robot" (14-Nov-64)
TV ep #3.13 "Quality of Mercy" (16-Jun-95)
TV ep #3.15 "The Voyage Home" (30-Jun-95)
TV ep #1.32 "The Forms of Things Unknown" (04-May-64)
