Overheard at #TRBAM in DC:
Why in the world is this wheelchair user choosing to ride in the street against traffic on a busy arterial rather than use these beautiful brick-lined sidewalk?

Oh wait... never mind.

When people say transportation research should get "back to basics," what do they mean? 🙃

This exhibit comes to mind – on the 4th Fl of the MLK Library, just a few blocks from #TRBAM

That's a wrap for the 2026 #TRBAM!

Thank you all for being part of a fantastic event! We'll see you next year, January 10 - 14, 2027!

It makes me sad that #trbam has cut out and been denied so many voices that are needed in the sector, and it makes me sadder how so much of the online chatter seems pretty much like it’s fine.

Look for Cameron Bennett at #TRBAM - he led the drafting of Oregon's bill this session but I don't think he's on Bluesky.

The Crossroads conference is tomorrow in DC - I'll be there and hope to see you as well. The transportation equity research the world needs to hear and #TRBAM doesn't want you to see ;)

Observations from #TRBAM
1. Fewer Committees makes for less specialization that advances technical knowledge ⬇️
2. ITE volunteers offer wonderful insight into practitioner perspectives that compliment state DOTs ⬆️
3. People coming together ⬆️
4. Students are the future ⬆️

What's the bill number?

At #TRBAM I heard of bills in Illinois and Florida to rein in e-motos. There's a lot of interest in good legislative ideas

Also heard strong interest in education and PSAs using Highway Safety Office funds, and a device identification guide coming from NHTSA in the future

We're at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting this week. Some favorite talks so far have covered:

- Crash prediction and innovations for safety
- Measuring economic development and health impacts
- Advancing automation
- Methods workshops

One research idea I heard at #TRBAM is just determining the actual speeds that people operate e-bikes and e-motos at

Nobody was aware of real world data on operating speeds by e-bike class

There's limited data on e-bike operating speeds generally, but it shows that operating speed isn't top speed

At #TRBAM I was surprised how worried bicycle researchers were about e-motos, and the threat of heavy handed restrictions on all e-bikes as an overreaction

E-bike bankruptcies were not mentioned at all, and consumers still have tons of choices (including e-motos)

Definitely keeping the faith

Opinion: Transportation Researchers Still Care About Equity. This Week They’re Proving It — Streetsblog USA This Thursday, progressives in transportation will fight back against the Trump administration.

For those who work on equity issues in transportation, this was a disruptive year, but researchers and advocates aren't going anywhere. Tomorrow theyll prove it.

My new @usa.streetsblog.org piece reflecting on #TRBAM week and the present political moment.
