Because Jayce wouldn't have survived the failure of one of their inventions hurting others in the way Viktor would have. It would have crushed them both in their own way, but it would have destroyed Jayce. Not only in her heart, that tender feeling thing, but in her ability to stay a part of the academic establishment that they both clung to so desperately as outsiders. The consequences would have been more severe for her, with her narrow escape of expulsion in her first year in school, her barely tolerated connection to her father's family name. But that had been a risk Viktor had been willing to take, whether she truly understood that. Would they ever be able to fathom how they had betrayed Jayce first? And yet. The pull, as ever, was too strong for Jayce to stay away - that electric connection, the weight of the years they had shared, the magnetism of Viktor's mind, her body, her soul. She had known it couldn't be one-sided, just her that yearned from afar. That they both watched each other closely, circling from a safe digital distance. That didn't mean it wasn't gratifying to have that confirmed. Jayce had ached for that familiar sharpness and softness so, so deeply - and to have gotten a taste had not sated her. To be reminded of what they once shared had only carved the Viktor-shaped hole in her heart deeper. And that damned tie was burning in her pocket.
