Il James Webb Space Telescope di NASA/ESA/CSA ha effettuato una scansione in senso orario lungo l’intero bordo (limbo) di Giove, inseguendo le aurore mentre ruotavano fino a entrare nel campo visivo. Questo fenomeno dinamico è il risultato di particelle cariche che viaggiano lungo le linee del campo magnetico, precipitando nell’ionosfera del pianeta e facendola brillare.

Durante la scansione, lo spettrografo nel vicino infrarosso (NIRSpec) di Webb ha catturato un aspetto straordinario delle aurore di Giove, noto come “impronte aurorali” (auroral footprints). Si tratta di schemi luminosi di emissione prodotti dall’interazione tra le lune galileiane di Giove e l’ambiente spaziale che circonda il pianeta gigante. Utilizzando i dati di NIRSpec, gli scienziati planetari hanno misurato le proprietà fisiche delle impronte aurorali delle due lune galileiane più interne, Io ed Europa, tra cui la temperatura locale e la densità dell’ionosfera, nel vicino infrarosso. Gli studiosi hanno scoperto una struttura a bassa temperatura mai osservata prima, centrata sul punto luminoso di emissione associato a Io, caratterizzata da densità estremamente elevate. Questo fenomeno è probabilmente causato da variazioni estreme nel flusso di elettroni che precipitano nell’alta atmosfera del pianeta.
