Went for an early Saturday morning run along some inner Portland arterials. So eye opening to spend time on normally heavily trafficked streets when they are empty. The impact on the air, noise levels and fear in of heavy hit by cross traffic is profound.
The abundant Peacock ads on the Olympics are already killing me!
A few of my crow pictures are below (some you might have to zoom in)
I've always found the Portland crows utterly fascinating. Love this video about them www.reddit.com/r/Portland/c...

This is the first in what we hope will be much more research to come on the growing trend of bike buses.
With Evan Howington and @johnmacpdx.bsky.social
Just published: Our eval of bike buses in Portland. Some key benefits we IDed are increases in physical activity and improved traffic safety / navigation skills. Challenges include institutionalizing bike buses and making sure benefits can be shared equitably.

This is a big deal. Spread the word. But it’s tiny compared to the totality of what’s happening at NIH. Cure Research for all cancers, Alzheimer’s, everything is being gutted. Intentionally. It’s all getting burned to the ground but the news isn’t getting out. The new cures won’t be there for you.
Hit me up if you have questions or want to talk through any ideas.

More than 22,000 crows come to roost in downtown PDX during the winter. Nathan McNeil sampled their evening sounds by bike. Go by bike and hear our crows!

I know of at least 4 NCHRP projects that have been terminated 🤮🤮
With the Trump admin deleting critical data from health agency websites, there are many independent efforts to archive the data. @maggiek.bsky.social is putting together a guide to help locate where all the data is being backed up. Use the form below to let her know about your efforts.

Chart from FHWA's 2024 Report "Summary of Travel Trends: 2022 National Household Travel Survey" nhts.ornl.gov/assets/2022/...
I didn't quite realize the degree to which the number of trips per day has been on a downward trajectory, and then took a further leap with the pandemic. From 1995 to 2022 the average trip rate dropped from 4.3 to 2.28, with half that drop coming between 2017 and 2022.
There should be a function that, when I mute my TV, automatically shifts the audio to some nice background music of my choice. Does that exist? If not, why not?
Two pics on a proper red slide: a Birds Eye view of a bus pulled up to a bus platform that has a bike lane between the shelter and the bus. On the right, a pic of same from bicyclist point of view, showing ‘stop here for peds’ sign and markings.
Great #trbam research from @nwurban.bsky.social on the safety and comfort of shared bike/bus stop platforms in Portland.
Findings - low conflicts, bicyclists slowed in the presence of buses and people, people generally managing interactions even when not strictly following design intent.
Imagine my delight strolling around the massive poster hall and then saying “hey, that’s our art!” In response to someone’s research presentation! This team from PSU + UNC is collecting data on types of tactical curb extensions in DC to see what works. Nice to meet you Sirisha and Wes! #trbam
