March 19–20! Radboud Uni & @unibas.ch are hosting a workshop on the "Transition Beyond Animal Experimentation.”
🗣️ The COLAAB’s Dr. Krebs of @pcrm.org will speak about #AnimalMethodsBias as a barrier to this transition, including the latest evidence & bias mitigation strategies from our group.
How does this impact #AnimalMethodsBias?
When review labor is stretched thin, expertise gaps grow. But appropriate expertise is crucial to ensure that #NAMs studies receive high-quality reviews and that animal-based studies aren’t unfairly favored.
We hear this often.
Innovative, animal‑free research gets slowed by expectations that animal data are required for a study to be considered “complete.”
This #AnimalMethodsBias shapes peer review, funding decisions, and publication.
It's a major barrier blocking the wider adoption of #NAMs.
When a reviewer’s #AnimalMethodsBias colors their comments—by unfairly judging a paper for not using animals—it's not always unprofessional or mean. But it can be discouraging.

💭 Ideas about peer review reforms? We got ‘em!
OSTP recently sought input on evidence-based reforms that could improve funding allocation, peer review, & grant evaluation.
We used this opportunity to raise awareness about #AnimalMethodsBias & provide recommendations for mitigating it.

The popular "woman yelling at dinner cat" meme with the following text: "Animal methods bias is inevitable! Not if you use the COLAAB's author guide"
2026 is almost here! If you’re racing to get your manuscript across the finish line, don’t let reviewer bias against nonanimal methods slow you down.
Our Author Guide helps you strengthen your manuscript and avoid #AnimalMethodsBias in manuscript review. 🧪

#AnimalMethodsBias is a #PeerReview bias characterized by a preference for animal-based research methods or a lack of expertise to properly evaluate new approach methodologies ( #NAMs ) and other nonanimal methods.
On behalf of The COLAAB, Physicians Committee scientist Dr. Catharine E. Krebs co-submitted a letter to NIH with recommendations to help reduce #animalmethodsbias during review of #grantapplications.

This #AnimalMethodsBias can result in unfair assessments of animal-free research.
Paired with the pressure to #PublishOrPerish, it can lead researchers to include animal experiments in their studies without scientific or ethical justification.
Last week, we offered our assistance to #NIH officials in advancing the agency's goal of reforming grant review to better prioritize human-based research.
We also recommended additional steps the agency could take to further mitigate #AnimalMethodsBias in the review process.

Perhaps two of the most impactful moves, if well executed, will be providing ECRs with non-animal methods training & addressing #AnimalMethodsBias in publishing. For the latter, it should certainly consult @thecolaab.bsky.social!
Will be very interested to see the target areas.

New strategy promises to: "Strengthen the commitment of journal editors to publishing research using alternative methods."" The COLAAB logo is in the bottom right corner.
The UK Home Office's new strategy, "Replacing animals in science: A strategy to support the development, validation and uptake of alternative methods," is an important step toward embracing nonanimal methods.
We took a look at how it will help mitigate #AnimalMethodsBias. 🧵

For her, the process wasn’t fundamentally different to setting up an animal-based lab.
One key difference?
#AnimalMethodsBias put Dr. Movia at a distinct disadvantage in competitive funding environments.
Well-known 4-panel meme of SpongeBob SquarePants reading a paper and then throwing the paper into the fire and warming his hands. In this version, the paper reads, "Reviewer 3: "These in vitro findings must be validated in an animal model," and SpongeBob is wearing a purple witch hat.
🧛♂️ Happy Halloween! What’s scarier than a bad review?
🍬 Reviewers handing out ‘add animal experiments’ comments like candy—even when your human-based study is solid.
👻 Don’t let #AnimalMethodsBias haunt your next paper.

When reviewers suggest animal experiments, as in cases of #AnimalMethodsBias, it introduces ethical concerns.
Under pressure to publish, researchers may feel compelled to conduct animal studies without scientific or ethical justification—just to satisfy reviewer demands.
#PublishorPerish
Referring to our landmark study on #AnimalMethodsBias, Celia noted:
“There’s also some evidence that scientific journals are biased in favor of animal-based experiments, and that some researchers use animal methods as insurance against reviewers’ anticipated requests for it later.”

It is aimed at all people interested in animal-free research and will be held in English. We accept registrations until 5th November 2025.” On the right, there’s a photo of a fluffy orange cat looking into an oval mirror with an ornate gold frame. Mark your calendars! The COLAAB's Dr. Catharine Krebs will be speaking about #AnimalMethodsBias at the 2025 Animalfree Research Foundation Forum.
"Perception and Power: Barriers to Animal-Free Research" will be on Monday, Nov 10 from 7 - 11am EST.
