A Lakeland scene on a winters day with the low sun almost completely in shade. Taken at Buttermere in the English Lake District. Two Herdwick Sheep stand grazing on the grass in the foreground. Behind them is a fence and a row of trees with a tiny glimpse of the lake on the right. High above these are some of the Western fells: Fleetwith Pike (partially in the sun) Green Crag and Haystacks (both in the shade). 95% of all Herdwick sheep are found in Cumbria, making them an iconic symbol of the area's landscape and cultural heritage. Herdwicks are known for being the hardiest of all British hill sheep breeds, well-suited to the harsh conditions of the high fells. Lambs are born black, and their fleece turns a distinctive grey with a white head as they mature. The breed has a natural "hefting" instinct, meaning they tend to stay on their specific area of the fell without extensive fencing. Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator, was a keen Herdwick breeder and played a key role in preserving the breed.
