A Lakeland scene on a winters day with the low sun almost completely in shade.
Taken at Buttermere in the English Lake District.
Two Herdwick Sheep stand grazing on the grass in the foreground. Behind them is a fence and a row of trees with a tiny glimpse of the lake on the right.
High above these are some of the Western fells: Fleetwith Pike (partially in the sun) Green Crag and Haystacks (both in the shade).
95% of all Herdwick sheep are found in Cumbria, making them an iconic symbol of the area's landscape and cultural heritage.
Herdwicks are known for being the hardiest of all British hill sheep breeds, well-suited to the harsh conditions of the high fells.
Lambs are born black, and their fleece turns a distinctive grey with a white head as they mature.
The breed has a natural "hefting" instinct, meaning they tend to stay on their specific area of the fell without extensive fencing.
Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator, was a keen Herdwick breeder and played a key role in preserving the breed.

A photograph of a wire fence extending into a lake, its lower half submerged after heavy rain. The long exposure has smoothed the water into a calm, glasslike surface without reflections, broken only by the dark fence posts and the fine grid of wire. In the distance, a steep mountain rises sharply, framed by surrounding hills under a brooding sky.

A peaceful Lakeland scene on a bright winters day. Taken at Buttermere in the English Lake District.
The calm lake is steel grey in colour with a blue hue from the reflection of the bright blue sky.
In the centre foreground is a barely visible solitary male Mallard duck with some circular ripples surrounding the duck.
The duck is reflected in the lake.
In the left background are fells completely in the shade from the low winter sun with the highest to lowest running left to right.
In the centre background is a sunlit fell (Mellbreak) which has quite a flat top from a distance. It is covered in green and brown vegetation.

A moody, atmospheric watercolor and ink illustration of the Cumbrian fells under a heavy, indigo sky. A single, ancient stone wall winds up a steep, heather-covered hillside, caught in a dramatic shaft of silver light breaking through storm clouds. Focus on wet-on-wet textures, deep shadows, and a sense of vast, poetic solitude.

"If you could teleport to one location in the Lake District right now, where would it be? I’m voting for the shores of Buttermere. Let’s daydream together in the comments.

Fabulous light over Buttermere, Cumbria today, lighting up gorse, cladonia, lighting up the bracken on the hills and of course a friendly robin joined our walk and a lovely herdy sheep.

Buttremere, Lake District. Inspired by a weekend spent exploring the fells of the Lakes. I walked up to Haystack and at the summit was greeted with sweeping views over #Buttermere and Crummock Water. 👉

A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows a view looking up to the mountains from a position on the pebbly shore. A wooden fence on the left proceeds into the water and a large tree can be seen over the fence. On the other side of the lake is a rocky mountain and a small wooded area.

A Lakeland scene in the Buttermere valley on a bright winters day.
Herdwick Sheep graze on the steep grassy slope of a fell.
Their fleeces are a mixture of mainly black, grey and white. Their faces and legs are white.
In the background are some rocky fells rising above the valley bottom and the line of trees behind the sheep.
The lower green and brown slopes are in shade, the grey craggy summit is highlighted by the low winter sun.
Traditional stone walls are visible at the bottom of the slope in the valley.
The sky is pale blue.
