A snapping turtle just under the top of the water. It is swimming left to right. The shell looks green under the water. The head and tail appear brown. Its front legs are spread out to the side as it swims.

We have #CommonSnappingTurtle babies! 🐢🥚

Their mom came to us in summer after a vehicle strike in DC. Sadly she didn't survive, but she laid all her eggs!

Now, 36 have hatched and 3 are unhatched. Many were released when the weather was warm enough, but we will need to keep the rest until spring!

A common snapping turtle in the grass. The turtle is moving from right to left in the photo. Its body and shell both appear to be black, with a hint of white just under the chin and on the inside of its legs. Its front legs are bent back as it appears to be walking. The head is pointed with the small nose at the end. The tail is long and pointed and extends out to the far right side of the photo's frame. It is walking on grass and behind it are lots of small rocks which it has just passed.

A snapping turtle in a garden

A snapping turtle in a garden

As a child I loved Dinosaurs and as an adult I seem to only love them more. Seeing so many snappers has really been a thrill of a lifetime.
And remember, never pick up a Snapping Turtle by it's tail, you will give it spinal injuries.

The front of a common snapping turtle, mostly under water. The turtle's nose and eyes are out of the water and he is looking straight at the camera.

Son found this baby snapping turtle this past spring and carefully moved the turtle off of the roadway, safe from car and bike tires. #PineryProvincialPark #OntarioParks #CommonSnappingTurtle #camping #nature

Common Snapping Turtle at Sandy Run Park in Kitty Hawk NC this Summer. This one seemed massive as it swam through the water.
