Democratizing data, one disease at a time - Yale News For five years, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, Anne Zink served as the chief medical officer for the state of Alaska. While leading the state’s health response, she often wished for better real-time data — not only about rates of COVID-19 but also for other diseases like influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). “One thing that continued to just amaze me and frustrate me was the lack of information and data that I had to make decisions,” said Zink, lecturer and senior fellow in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH). So, when Zink joined YSPH in 2024, she and her colleagues decided to build the type of data platform that could have helped her while working for the state of Alaska. Called PopHIVE (Population Health Information and Visualization Exchange), the platform puts near real-time, reliable health data directly into the hands of the public. “I was trying to give my former self the gift of data,” said Zink, who now serves as PopHIVE’s co-director. A clearer picture PopHIVE pulls data from a range of sources, including anonymized hospital records, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), national health surveys, anonymized...

Researchers identify cellular drivers of gut scarring in Crohn's disease As inflamed regions of the gut form scar tissue, the space within the gut lumen becomes smaller and more restricted, leading to symptoms of gut obstruction. There is currently no drug treatment available for this complication – eventually as fibrosis worsens, surgery becomes the only option. The researchers discovered that the biggest build up of scar tissue takes place in the submucosa (a layer of tissue beneath the inner lining of the bowel) – this indicates that the submucosa could be the starting point where the scarring begins. Inflammation, the hallmark of Crohn's Disease, brings clusters or aggregates of immune cells into the submucosa. Using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to study fibrosis in Crohn's Disease, the researchers uncovered an unusual clustering of endothelial cells - cells which usually line blood vessels - around these groups of immune cells (known as Crohn's lymphoid aggregates or CLAs). These clusters of blood vessel cells signal to scar building cells (fibroblasts/myofibroblasts) either directly or through macrophages, to start producing excessive collagen or scar tissue. This suggests that these Crohn's lymphoid aggregates may have a significant role in driving the process of fibrosis. Pathologists, gastroenterologists, biomedical scientists and computer experts at the University of Edinburgh...

Spiritual Distress Is a Clinical Reality in Brain Disease Summary: Neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and dementia don’t just affect the body; they dismantle a person’s sense of self, memory, and communication. A new paper argues that because these diseases attack the core of human identity, spiritual care must become a routine part of neurological treatment. The researchers propose a “biopsychosocial-spiritual” model, moving beyond purely physical symptoms to address the existential distress that often accompanies a life-altering diagnosis. Key Facts The Identity Crisis: Neurological conditions are unique because they erode the traits that define who we are. For these patients, spirituality is often a primary tool for finding meaning and resilience. The 60% Gap: While roughly 60% of adults want their spiritual concerns acknowledged by doctors, most clinicians avoid the topic due to lack of training, time constraints, or personal discomfort. The FICA Framework: The paper recommends the FICA tool (Faith, Importance, Community, Address) to help neurologists take a quick, structured spiritual history in under two minutes. Spiritual Generalists: Neurologists don’t need to be clergy; they act as “spiritual generalists” who identify distress, validate a patient’s humanity, and refer them to chaplains or therapists when needed. Clinician Burnout: Integrating spiritual care isn’t just for patients—it’s linked to lower burnout and...

Experimental drug restores memory loss caused by Alzheimer's disease, defying decades of research Scientists have reversed severe memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s disease by restoring the brain’s energy supply in two mouse models. Late-stage mice showed brain tissue repairing itself once fuel balance returned, challenging the idea that Alzheimer’s only moves forward. Memory reversal in mice In two mouse strains designed to develop Alzheimer-like changes, the animals returned to normal performance even after symptoms had grown severe. By comparing mouse and human brains, Andrew A. Pieper, M.D., Ph.D., at University Hospitals (UH) traced the damage to an energy crisis. Across early and late disease stages, Pieper’s lab saw the same weak point: brains could not keep fuel chemistry stable. Instead of aiming only to slow decline, the experiments pointed toward repairs that begin when the brain’s energy balance recovers. NAD+ and brain fuel Behind that recovery sat NAD+, a helper molecule that keeps cells turning nutrients into usable energy. Every time a neuron fires and repairs itself, NAD+ helps run the chemical reactions that build proteins and fix DNA. Aging slowly drains NAD+ across the body, and the new work found an even steeper drop in Alzheimer’s brains. With cases projected to reach 153 million by 2050, a therapy aimed at recovery would...

Scientists discover a new cause of autoimmune diseases Scientists have discovered a surprising link between leukemia and autoimmune diseases. A new study shows that certain genetic changes connected to leukemia can also create abnormal immune cells that mistakenly attack the body. This discovery helps explain why some people with leukemia also develop autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or aplastic anemia. The research was carried out by scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Australia. Their findings provide new insight into how the immune system can go wrong and lead to both cancer and autoimmune disease. The study was led by Dr. Etienne Masle‑Farquhar and the results were published in the scientific journal Immunity. To understand this discovery, it helps to know how the immune system normally works. The immune system is the body’s natural defense system. Its job is to protect us from harmful threats such as viruses, bacteria, and abnormal cells. One important group of immune cells is known as T cells. These cells act like soldiers that patrol the body looking for danger. Among these T cells are special defenders called “killer T cells.” Their job is to destroy infected or damaged cells before they cause harm. When the immune system works properly,...

Dementia-related plaques also form in heart disease, opening up study and potential therapy Heart failure and Alzheimer's disease are both devastating conditions that can put equal strain on patients and families. They might also be related: the same toxic proteins that cause dementia in the brain also damage the heart, causing a certain kind of heart failure that is more prevalent in women, new research shows. Finding the root of that connection, and a potential therapy for it, is the groundbreaking work of Dr. Federica del Monte at the Medical University of South Carolina. A generous gift of $5 million from anonymous donors is helping her and her team at MUSC explore this. Through a multidisciplinary clinic, they are enrolling patients in a clinical trial to look for blood biomarkers and and combining this with imaging to examine how the diseases progress while also looking at a potential targeted therapy. The work is at the forefront of an increasing focus on the connection between the heart and its diseases and the brain and dementias as doctors search for new ways to prevent and treat a growing epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease in an aging population. “What is really exciting is that we're now talking about those things together, that when we're looking at one...

2026 cancer report projects 100 more Iowans to die from the disease than in 2025 An estimated 21,700 new cancers will be diagnosed among Iowans, and a projected 6,400 Iowans will die from cancer in 2026, 100 more than in 2025, according to the Iowa Cancer Registry’s 2026 report published March 13. There are a projected 165 residents who will die from cancer and 6,795 survivors of the disease in Johnson County, according to the 2026 report. This year, the Iowa Cancer Registry partnered with the Agricultural Health Study an ongoing research study that explores how agricultural lifestyle factors affect the health of farmers in Iowa and North Carolina, to analyze cancer in Iowa’s farming population. Mary Charlton, professor of epidemiology in the College of Public Health and co-author of the Iowa Cancer Registry report, said partnering with the study stemmed from public concern over pesticide use. 31,433 male farmers signed up for the study when it began in the mid-1990s, along with 22,145 women, either spouses of the farmers or farmers themselves. Farmers were eligible for the study if they obtained or renewed a pesticide license. The study is still ongoing. The study found that farmers had 13 percent fewer cancer cases than expected based on Iowa’s general population cancer rate. Spouses had 10...

Intraocular foreign bodies in Asia: insights from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) constitute a significant public health concern that hinders the accumulation of human capital in countries in Asia. This research aims to identify and project the time trend of the IOFB disease burden in Asia to 2035. Methods We utilised data collected from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) query tool. Time Trends of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and incidence of IOFBs were calculated. Age- and gender-specific disease burden of IOFBs in 2019 was also analysed. A Bayesian age-period cohort (BAPC) model with integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA) was applied to project the number and rate of the disease burden attributable to IOFB from 2020 to 2035. Results In Asia, the DALYs number increased from 290,521.62 (95% UI: 146,816.5–513,604.1) in 1990 to 388,363.39 (95% UI: 206,296.3–668,164.9) in 2019. The number of DALYs showed an upward trend until the age of 45–49 years, and then decreased in later age groups. The age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of China is projected to increase substantially from 719.03 in 2019 to 3127.06 in 2035. Singapore is projected to experience a slight decline, while the remaining six countries are projected to have slight, steady increases in ASIR. Conclusion Countries in Asia are facing...
