Tickborne Diseases in Workers - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | CDC (.gov) Ticks can be infected with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Bites from infected ticks can pass tickborne pathogens to humans. CDC has information related to ticks and tickborne disease, including: Diseases transmitted by ticks Symptoms of tickborne diseases What to do if a tick bites you The geographic distribution of ticks Worksites with woods, bushes, high grass, or leaf litter are likely to have ticks. Ticks may be active all year in some regions with warmer weather. In the United States, they are most active in the spring, summer, and fall. Prevention Recommendations for employers Provide training for workers that includes information about: How tickborne diseases spread. Risks of exposure and infection. How workers can protect themselves from ticks. Reporting workplace illnesses and injuries. Tell workers to wear light-colored long-sleeved shirts, pants, socks, and hat when possible. If uniforms are provided, have long-sleeved shirts and pants as options. Provide workers with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents containing one of the following: DEET Picaridin IR3535 Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) Para-menthane-diol (PMD) 2-undecanone Provide workers with repellents (such as Permethrin) to provide greater protection. Permethrin kills ticks on contact. It can be used on clothing but not skin. When possible, have...

Intraocular foreign bodies in Asia: insights from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) constitute a significant public health concern that hinders the accumulation of human capital in countries in Asia. This research aims to identify and project the time trend of the IOFB disease burden in Asia to 2035. Methods We utilised data collected from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) query tool. Time Trends of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and incidence of IOFBs were calculated. Age- and gender-specific disease burden of IOFBs in 2019 was also analysed. A Bayesian age-period cohort (BAPC) model with integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA) was applied to project the number and rate of the disease burden attributable to IOFB from 2020 to 2035. Results In Asia, the DALYs number increased from 290,521.62 (95% UI: 146,816.5–513,604.1) in 1990 to 388,363.39 (95% UI: 206,296.3–668,164.9) in 2019. The number of DALYs showed an upward trend until the age of 45–49 years, and then decreased in later age groups. The age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of China is projected to increase substantially from 719.03 in 2019 to 3127.06 in 2035. Singapore is projected to experience a slight decline, while the remaining six countries are projected to have slight, steady increases in ASIR. Conclusion Countries in Asia are facing...

Genomic sequencing of multicystic mesothelioma finds cohesin complex mutations associated with disease recurrence in patients referred for cyt Multicystic mesothelioma (MCM) is an uncommon tumour arising from mesothelial cells [1,2,3,4,5,6]. It is almost always encountered in the peritoneum, where it accounts for about 3–5% of mesothelial tumours, but rare cases arising from the pleura have been described [7]. It can occur in both sexes and at any age, although women of child-bearing age are most often affected. The commonest locations are the lower abdomen and pelvis. Although many patients are asymptomatic, patients may complain of severe episodic pain, abdominal distention, urinary disturbances or constipation. Unlike other types of mesothelial neoplasm, the link between asbestos exposure and development of MCM remains uncertain. Macroscopically, the lesions are characterised by multiple thin-walled cysts of varying size, sometimes forming confluent masses 20 cm or more in diameter. Microscopy shows the cysts to have fibrous walls lined by cells exhibiting the histological and ultrastructural features of mesothelium [1, 3, 8, 9]. Treatment can include cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in selected patients with good long-term outcomes [2, 8, 10]. The nature of multicystic mesothelioma has been controversial [6]. There is evidence that it is a true neoplasm: lesions can be progressive and recur after surgery, and in some cases the lesions are...

Assessment and management of dry eye disease in the UK: standardising reality-based best practice Dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface involving loss of tear film homoeostasis and ocular surface inflammation [1, 2], can result in symptoms including discomfort and changes to vision [1, 3, 4]. DED affects around one third of the UK population [5]. The impact of DED on patients’ quality of life (QoL), both mental and physical, can be substantial [3, 4, 6,7,8], and the experience of moderate or severe disease has previously been compared to that of angina [9]. Furthermore, DED is associated with a substantial impact on productivity and work life, even for mild or moderate disease [8], with an increased risk of unemployment and a rate of absenteeism above the average [10]. Assessment of DED is complicated by the fact that signs and symptoms do not always correlate; notably, patients can present with debilitating pain associated with few clinical signs (termed neuropathic pain) [2, 4, 11]. Global guidance on the assessment and management of DED was developed by the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Dry Eye Workshop II (TFOS DEWS II) [1, 12, 13] and updated recently as DEWS III [2, 8, 14]; but international guidelines, however comprehensive, cannot fully reflect the realities of...

Improving preoperative enteral feeding for newborns with congenital heart disease The aim of this quality improvement project was to increase preoperative enteral feeding and breastfeeding rates in term neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD). Methods A multidisciplinary team developed and implemented a preoperative feeding protocol for neonates with congenital heart disease. The primary outcome was the presence of preoperative enteral feeding by May 2025. Secondary outcomes included breastfeeding rates and time to first feed. The process measure was the rate of reference to the feeding protocol in provider notes. Our balancing measure was a rule out or diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis requiring medical or surgical treatment in the preoperative period. Infants were identified using the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Collaborative (PC4). Data was collected from chart review and analyzed with statistical process control charts. The pre-implementation period was from June 2022 to June 2023, the implementation period was from July 2023 to June 2024, and the sustainment period was from July 2024 through May 2025. Results The number of neonates that met the inclusion criteria was 121. The rate of overall enteral feeding increased significantly from 72% in the pre-implementation phase (June 2022-June 2023) to 93% in the sustainment phase (July 2024–May 2025) (p = 0.026). Additionally, we found an...

Yaks may hint at a way to treat brain diseases like MS A brain repair kit that helps yaks and other animals naturally cope with low oxygen levels at high altitudes may point to a new way to treat brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In mice with brain damage that mimics MS, the kit’s tools lessened signs of damage in young mice exposed to low oxygen and improved symptoms of MS in adult mice, researchers report March 13 in Neuron. Previous research found that animals living on the Tibetan Plateau, such as yaks and antelopes, carry a mutation in a gene called Retsat. Their lowland counterparts lack the mutation, leading scientists to suspect that it helps protect the brain in low-oxygen environments. “People usually think it’s because of better lung capability, but I wondered whether evolutionary adaptation changes the brain,” says Liang Zhang, a neuroscientist at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In particular, he was intrigued that these animals have normal white matter in their brains. White matter makes up about half the brain; it consists of bundles of nerve fibers that allow different brain regions to communicate. This neural wiring is wrapped in myelin, a fatty substance that ensures nerve fibers conduct signals efficiently. In MS, the immune system attacks myelin,...

Pediatric bronchiolitis disease severity is associated with immune checkpoint dysregulation Bronchiolitis is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection in children under two years of age and is primarily associated with viral pathogens such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and rhinoviruses.1 The disease exhibits a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from self-limiting symptoms to severe respiratory failure requiring pediatric intensive care, and is a major contributor to infant morbidity and mortality worldwide.2,3 Despite its prevalence, the immunopathogenesis of bronchiolitis remains incompletely understood, and predictive biomarkers for disease severity are lacking. Recent evidence highlights the critical role of immune dysregulation, particularly T cell–mediated responses, in bronchiolitis. Immune checkpoint molecules—such as cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3), T-cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT), and glycoprotein A repetitions predominant (GARP)—modulate T cell activation and maintain immune homeostasis. Aberrant regulation of these molecules has been implicated in various diseases but remains underexplored in bronchiolitis.4,5 Immune checkpoints have been extensively studied in oncology and chronic viral infections. Molecules such as CTLA-4 and programmed death-1 (PD-1) are targets of immunotherapy and are associated with immune exhaustion in infections like HIV and hepatitis B.6,7 Likewise, lymphocyte activation gene 3 (LAG-3) and TIM-3 have been shown to regulate the balance...

Funding disease preparedness moves on, poultry depopulation bill postponed indefinitely States are preparing for the worst when it comes to highly pathogenic avian influenza and even New World screwworm. In Colorado, legislators are putting their money where their mouths are. The Diseased Livestock Indemnity Fund bill, sponsored by Reps. Karen McCormick, DVM, D-Longmont, and Ty Winter, R-Trinidad, and Sens. Byron Pelton, R-Sterling, and Dylan Roberts, D-Frisco, just passed its third reading in the Senate. Under current law, livestock owners may receive compensation from the Diseased Livestock Indemnity Fund after their herd is required to be sold for slaughter or destroyed because it was exposed to a contagious disease. The bill expands the allowable uses of the money in this fund to include preparing and responding to: • infectious or contagious diseases that pose a threat to livestock; and, • biological or chemical contaminants of animals that pose a threat to livestock. State Veterinarian Maggie Baldwin testified in favor of the changes before the Senate Ag and Natural Resources Committee last week. “In order to ensure that we’re adequately prepared and able to respond to the threats that could impact our food security, we need to have adequate resources including funding to build and maintain resilience against new and ongoing livestock...

Scientists Say Conquering Age-Related Diseases Could Dramatically Extend Human Life A new analysis suggests many anti-aging claims may reflect disease-specific improvements rather than genuine slowing of aging. The analysis, published in Genomic Psychiatry, calls on researchers to rethink how biological aging is measured and interpreted. Dr. Dan Ehninger, who leads the Translational Biogerontology Laboratory at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Dr. Maryam Keshavarz conducted a systematic review examining widely used indicators of aging. Their work argues that common measures such as lifespan extension, epigenetic clocks, frailty indices, and even the widely cited hallmarks of aging framework may blur the line between true changes in aging and general physiological effects that occur regardless of age. One of the most surprising insights comes from comparing causes of death across species. In humans, cardiovascular disease is responsible for roughly 35 to 70 percent of deaths among older adults. Autopsy studies prove that even centenarians who appeared healthy shortly before death almost always died from identifiable medical conditions rather than from old age alone. Research on people between 97 and 106 years old further supports this pattern, with vascular diseases remaining the leading cause of death. These findings highlight that even exceptional longevity usually ends with a specific disease. What Actually Causes...

Climate change is an inflammatory disease issue | News | Eco-Business | Asia Pacific Researchers have identified a second “major wave” of chronic inflammatory disorders, starting in the 2000s, says Agache. This coincides with increased “climate-change-derived aggressors” such as extreme weather events and wildfires. It also correlates with new pathogens and the increasing presence of microplastics and nanoparticles, Agache adds. The first wave had been identified in the 1970s, says Agache, coinciding with the introduction of certain cleaning agents, outdoor pollution, fast foods and cosmetics with certain additives. Climate action plans fail to address the latest research Last November, several civil society health networks attended the COP30 climate conference in Brazil. Representing health organisations from different countries, they called for lower emissions and more funding for climate adaptation, especially in the Global South, where climate impacts are more intense and countries have fewer resources to adapt. But the conference had no dedicated negotiation track for health issues. The body which runs climate COPs, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), does however, require countries to consider health impacts when preparing the national adaptation plans they submit to it. Meanwhile, the UNFCCC and World Health Organization (WHO), with whom the UNFCCC has increasingly partnered over the last several years, both encourage countries to voluntarily...

Gut microbiota modulation via repeated donor fecal transplantation improves motor and gastrointestinal symptoms in drug-naïve Parkinson's disease: a randomized phase 2 trial Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and the accumulation of pathological α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregates.1 Dopamine replacement therapy, particularly levodopa, remains the cornerstone of symptom management. However, it primarily offers transient relief and fails to alter disease progression.2,3 Over time, many patients develop motor fluctuations and inadequate control of nonmotor symptoms,4 underscoring the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies beyond conventional pharmacotherapy. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), the transfer of stool from healthy donors to patients, has been an established treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection since 2013.5,6 In recent years, interest in FMT has expanded to include neurodegenerative diseases because of its ability to modulate the gut microbiome, reduce inflammation, and influence neuroimmune signaling. Intriguingly, the gut-brain axis has emerged as a critical component of PD pathogenesis. Experimental models suggest that misfolded α-syn may originate in the gut and ascend to the brain via the vagus nerve,7,8 supporting the hypothesis that gastrointestinal pathology may initiate or contribute to central neurodegeneration. This hypothesis is further supported by clinical observations. Gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly constipation, often precede motor symptoms by years and may signal prodromal neurodegeneration.9 Moreover, PD patients frequently exhibit...
