A scene of a placid lake with water lilies framed by pine trees. You can see the dune barrier that created the lake across the water. The sky overhead is blue with thin fog clouds.

At one point, Cranberry Lake was a saltwater inlet. The retreating Cordilleran Ice Sheet created a basin about 15,000 years ago, which filled with ocean water. Over time, sand dunes built up a divide between the lake and West Beach. Some saltwater still exists in the depths of the lake.

Cranberry Lake got its name from its history as a cranberry bog used by settlers.

The divide between the ocean and the lake is remarkably small. Looking towards the West, you can see that thin blue line of the ocean beyond the dune
barrier.

The lake is a favorite
swimming and kayaking spot, the water being warmer (and much calmer!) than the Pacific.

Mining’s toxic timebomb: dams full of poisonous waste are dotted around the world. What happens when they burst? While tailings dams are meant to last for ever, extreme weather events are making many unstable – with devastating consequences for nature and humans

'Tailings dams – repositories of mining waste that is often toxic and stored under water – litter landscapes around the world. Often, they hold huge quantities of poisonous, harmful material.'

Bees are making the most of the last open flowers 🐝

Blooming was unusually SHORT — leaving very little time for pollination... Will it be enough for a good fruit set? 🫐

Results in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

The Maranhão mangroves is a mangrove ecoregion of northern Brazil. It supports half of the shorebird population of the country. The combination of flat land, heavy rainfall and high tides causes the mangroves to extend up to 40 kilometres (25 mi) inland, where they are interspersed with other rainforest species. (Closest article: Maranhão mangroves, ~2.84 miles; found via undefined-mile search)

Mangrove forests are short of breath The tidal environment of mangrove forests serves as nurseries for many fish species. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have measured carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in 23 of world’s mangrove areas. The study sends out a warning that these ecosystems are increasingly threatened as sea temperatures continue to rise.
