A scene of a placid lake with water lilies framed by pine trees. You can see the dune barrier that created the lake across the water. The sky overhead is blue with thin fog clouds.

At one point, Cranberry Lake was a saltwater inlet. The retreating Cordilleran Ice Sheet created a basin about 15,000 years ago, which filled with ocean water. Over time, sand dunes built up a divide between the lake and West Beach. Some saltwater still exists in the depths of the lake.

Cranberry Lake got its name from its history as a cranberry bog used by settlers.

The divide between the ocean and the lake is remarkably small. Looking towards the West, you can see that thin blue line of the ocean beyond the dune
barrier.

swimming and kayaking spot, the water being warmer (and much calmer!) than the Pacific.

Horizontal color photo: The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse sits atop a rocky cliff at the edge of the ocean in Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington, State. The fog and mist soften and mute the lighthouse and the cliff in the upper right half of the image. A wave breaks against this cliff, just left of center, sending watery spraying up and back.

Black-tailed Deer Amidst Ferns

A Columbian black-tailed deer pauses to take a look at me before resuming its morning grazing along a fern-covered hillside in Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington. Horizontal color photograph: the female deer is standing amidst large green ferns. You can follow its body in from about the middle of the left side of the frame until you reach its head which is just to the right of the center of the frame, with it's eyes above the centerline of the image. The doe is brown furred, with a white path at her throat and chin, and a thin circle of white fur around he black nose. Her ears are perked up, and she's staring straight into the camera.

Very rusty iron doors are falling apart at the entrance to a bunker at McKenzie Head, Cape Deception, Washington. The bunker was built into a hillside. The cement around the doorway is yellow with lichen. The doors themselves are large, heavy, with metal cross braces, and vents for fans at the top. The rust is so pervasive that the doors look as if theyd fall apart if touched. The tunnel entrance is dark and carpeted with debris and moss. The scene is derelict and sad.

Salish sea skyscape from last weekend's camping trip at Deception Pass. There was rain. There was sun. There was "wintery mix". It could have been much colder and wetter, so we'll file it under "Successful Trip".

There is a small hydroelectric plant just below this set of falls, however, most of the water is diverted into a tunnel above the falls, so what you see here is just a ghost of what they could be.
