Meanwhile, on Earth:
Ladybugs wake up in March. Their bright red wings are covered in microscopic pores that release a bitter defensive fluid.

No bears here, in Devon our woodlands have Southern wood ants.
Formica rufa workers are about 10 mm long, building nests up to a metre tall.
On the of 5th March I watched two nests awaken for spring, (about 500 m apart), as thousands of ants emerged into the warmth.

If you look closely, you can see the moss mantis' newly formed wing buds. Her next and final molt will produce fully developed adult wings.

A black-spotted red ladybug with white compound eyes crawls along the stem of a pear tree flower toward an unopened white bud. Light green leaves and more white buds fill the frame.
“To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.” – John Burroughs 🐞 #MacroMonday #Flowers #EastCoastKin #Trees #NaturePhotography #Ladybug #Insects

Some happy little bees enjoying the flowers in our #garden for #MacroMonday. As life returns there, I am also slowly making my way out of hibernation. Hoping I can find the habit of posting again!

The image features a gouache illustration of three distinct insects on a dotted background. At the top, a blue and green weevil-like insect with an elongated snout is depicted, having slender yellow-tipped legs. Below, a large green shield bug with an overall triangular shape is perched on a brown stalk. Its body is mostly green with black edges and a pair of antennae. At the bottom left, a brown beetle with a segmented body clings to another stalk. It has feathery orange antennae and a textured body. The background is pale with a grid of faint grey dots.

A black and white tripped swallowtail butterfly with red markings at the base of it's posterior wing is shown. (Eurytides marcellus) The butterfly is resting on sandy soil with brown leaf litter
Zebra swallowtails are dependent upon pawpaw plants to lay their eggs and have their caterpillars develop. This photo was taken near a group of pawpaws. Caterpillars derive toxins from pawpaw that make them distasteful to predators. 🦋🐛 #swallowtails #butterflies #nature #spring #EKC #insects #bugsky

1, 2, Three-lined Balsa, looking for a partner to dance the salsa. If you can't find me with my woody cloak, head to the hawthorn and ask any bloke. When the sun goes down and the music plays, I'm ready to move around the porch lit haze 💃

Birds do it, bees do it, .... A pair of flying insects, not sure what they are, cling to a concrete step and go tail to tail to copulate.

Pictures of two moths, presumably a male and a female. They both have fuzzy orange heads and a white spot on each wing. The wings on the larger one are more orange and the wings on the smaller one or darker. The third photo shows physical engagement.

In the March forest floor, springtails jump using a tiny fork-like tail. To them, a moss clump is a vast mountain range.

Weather forecast for the next couple of days in Ottawa. Lot of variation!
We have entered the spring chaos period of annual #weather up where I live. Tough week for the #birds but also for #insects that overwinter aboveground as adults, of which there are a few.
A close-up photograph of a honey bee, resting upon a lush green, jagged edged geranium leaf. It is still, and its wing nearest the camera has a single drop of morning dew shining from the tip.
"Though the days be full
Of buzzing and toil,
And the quiet times be few,
May you always find
The sacred space
In which to feel the dew."
