Coal miners are losing more than the black lung program with the cuts to NIOSH. We research emerging technologies to keep miners safe, ground control, ventilation, and fire prevention. We also test the self-rescuer that miners wear on their belt to ensure protection.

Did you know…
NIOSH partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard, and Crab Fishermen to make their profession less dangerous. Due to overloading, boats would capsize and the fishermen died. NIOSH analyzed this data and the Coast Guard implemented inspections to assess the boats stability.
