At #ACES2025, I attended Dave Nelsen's eye-opening session on proposal editing—a specialized field that affects billions in business decisions but rarely gets discussed in editing circles. What exactly is a proposal? When organizations issue RFPs (requests for proposals), RFIs (requests for information), or RFQs (requests for quotes), they're essentially sending out complex questionnaires. The responses—proposals—can run hundreds of pages and represent weeks of intense collaborative work. In fact, the Association for Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) has over 10,000 members. As Dave noted, "Proposals are definitely a thing." The assembly challenge What makes proposal editing uniquely demanding? Compressed timelines: The typical 60-day process often leaves editors just days (sometimes hours) at the end. "If someone at the beginning takes too much time, it comes out of our time," Dave said. Committee-written content: Proposals combine recycled stock answers, revised material, and brand-new content written by subject matter experts who aren't professional writers. That can save everyone time. Business-speak overload: Technical jargon, corporate language, and bureaucratic phrasing create readability nightmares. Having a good glossary can help during editing.
