Earlier this month I had the privilege of MCing the @team #protocolsforpublishers event in London, bringing together people from publishers and the open protocols that might help them secure their futures. I wrote up my experiences: https://werd.io/building-trust-in-the-open/
Something I found myself saying at the #AtProto meetup and at #ProtocolsForPublishers was that atproto/bluesky is at the 2010 Twitter point where people could see the potential and build on it.
The growth of devs is what @pistachio.bsky.social saw at the time.
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: ActivityPub: build community apps - share with your audience
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: ATPtroto - experiment wiht distribution - put content on protocol, let algorithms find audiences
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: the Open social web can separate these again
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: big tech conflated two things - community building and news distribution. They're very different things, but are stuffed into one
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Mastodon is counter-positioning as the human network - explicitly contrasted with AI-mediated platforms
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: AI Agents - not chatbots but the agents running over atproto - it makes a good substrate as the open data is legible to machines becasue of consistent structure
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: standards.site is a grassroots standard for longform content so the different longform apps can interoperate
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: beyond bluesky this data lake enables abroader protocol ecosystem - Tangled (github like) Streamplace (video) Leaflet (long form content)
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Eurosky is EU - Gander is canadian; Blacksky is for the black community; Northsky for the LGBTQ+ community
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Bluesky is the default platform - other options based on geography (Eurosky, Gander) and Identity (Blacksky, Northsky) are popping up
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: when you log into bluesky, you log into an app, but the data is outside. The app picks up a bit of data from the big pool of data and shows you some of it
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: AtProto is different - the Data is separated from the App - the data layer is distinct and your content exists independently from any app
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Branded community apps - Newsmast and The Bristol Cable - one branded app per server and community - combines community feeds with the publishers articles
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: they have their own agency, their own members and rules - the fediverse is a network of networks - each server is its own network, and part of the rest of the place
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: ActivityPub is 9 years old. Places sending messages to each other - a server is aplace - you can visit it and it has a sense of placeness that is different from the others
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: there are different opportunities becasue the protocols and architectyres are different
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Two protocols, two visions - ActivityPub: Networked communities; ATProto: Global data layer
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: all the ways that news travels through the network is downstream from its structure
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Network structure matters and it determines reach. Musk can contrl the algorithm on X, but the network structure that gives him this option
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: social networks are extremely powerful for news distribution, but they weren't designed for this
#ProtocolsForPublishers @mastodon.laurenshof.online: Distribution is an emergent property of social networks
Kind of annoyed the last train home is at 10pm but I have to say after a while away from the open source community,
I ducking love the open source community.
Thank you to everyone I met at #PfP #ProtocolsForPublishers for the chats and the talks.
I needed this. I’m inspired again. Stay in touch
My full notes from the #ProtocolsForPublishers showcase tonight are up on my website at kevinmarks.com/pfpshowcase....
#ProtocolsForPublishers Nick Bennett: through the foundation we can assist groups with doing this - scrubbing PII and manually approving datasets
#ProtocolsForPublishers q: how do you handle sensitive or personal data?
#ProtocolsForPublishers Nick Bennett: Mozilla Common Voice, which is labelled voice data in different languages is part of this
#ProtocolsForPublishers Nick Bennett: more of a marketplace or platform than an archive - labelling is part of this
#ProtocolsForPublishers q: is this meant to be an archive? Is labelling/metadata part of this?
