Severe COVID-19 or Influenza Linked to Elevated Lung Cancer Risk New research from the University of Virginia Health System reveals that severe cases of COVID-19 or influenza can significantly increase the risk of lung cancer months or years later. Scientists, led by Jie Sun, PhD, found that serious viral infections alter immune cells in the lungs, such as neutrophils and macrophages, creating a persistent pro-tumor inflammatory environment. This chronic inflammation supports tumor growth and was observed in both mouse models and human patient data. Analysis showed a 1.24-fold increase in lung cancer incidence among patients hospitalized for COVID-19, independent of smoking or comorbidities. The study emphasizes that this elevated risk primarily affects those with severe infections requiring hospitalization, while mild cases did not show similar patterns and even had slightly lower incidence. Encouragingly, vaccination prevents these harmful lung changes by enabling milder immune responses and reducing infection severity. Researchers recommend enhanced surveillance, such as routine lung CT scans, for high-risk patients recovering from severe respiratory infections, particularly those with smoking history. The findings, published in Cell, highlight vaccination's indirect benefit in cancer prevention and call for targeted strategies to mitigate long-term effects of viral pneumonia. With millions worldwide experiencing long COVID lung issues, this has major implications for clinical care and early detection.

South Carolina Measles Outbreak Shows Downward Trend After Reaching Nearly 1,000 Cases A significant measles outbreak in South Carolina, the largest in the United States in over 30 years, is demonstrating signs of slowing after peaking in mid-January. The state has reported a steady decline in new infections, dropping to approximately 10 cases per week recently, compared to around 200 per week at its height. As of early March 2026, the outbreak—centered in Spartanburg County and sparked in October 2025—has approached 1,000 total cases, with more than 93 percent occurring in unvaccinated individuals, predominantly children under 18. Low vaccination rates in schools, holiday gatherings, and church events fueled rapid spread, leading to severe complications like pneumonia and encephalitis in some patients. State epidemiologist Linda Bell expressed cautious optimism about the downward trajectory but warned of risks from spring break travel and potential re-surges, urging continued vigilance. The outbreak prompted a substantial vaccination increase: Spartanburg County saw a 133 percent rise in MMR doses (about 900 additional), while statewide February doses rose 70 percent (over 7,000 more) compared to the prior year. Nationally, the CDC reported 1,281 measles cases in 2026 as of March 5—over half of 2025's 2,283 total—with 12 outbreaks across states like Arizona, Texas, and Utah, raising concerns that the US could lose its measles elimination status achieved in 2000. Experts attribute the resurgence to declining vaccination coverage, emphasizing the need for sustained public health efforts to curb transmission and prevent complications.

Effectiveness of Inactivated #COVID19 #coronavirus #Vaccination Against #COVID19 #coronavirus–Related Hospitalization and Severe Outcomes in Adults ≥80 Years During Omicron Circulation in Beijing, China: Retrospective Cohort Study Background: A large wave of #COVID19 #coronavirus caused by SARS-CoV-2 #COVID19 #coronavirus Omicron subvariants began in Beijing in early December 2022. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the #COVID19 #coronavirus #Vaccine effectiveness (VE) in mitigating the risk of #COVID19 #coronavirus–related hospitalization during the #Epidemic. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study linking regional health care data and #Vaccination registry routinely collected in Beijing. All electronic medical records on #COVID19 #coronavirus–related hospital discharges of older inpatients aged ≥80 years during November 2022 and February 2023 were included. Poisson regressions were used to estimate incidence risk ratio of #COVID19 #coronavirus–related hospitalization, severe or critical cases, and in-hospital death compared with un#Vaccinated groups, adjusting for gender and age. VE was calculated as 1 minus incidence risk ratio×100%. Results: A total of 53,789 individuals aged ≥80 years were included, 28,423 (52.84%) were male, 45,270 (84.16%) were aged 80‐89 years, and 8519 (15.84%) were aged ≥90 years. Overall, 30,531 (56.76%) were in the #Vaccine group, with 4524 (8.41%) of the total participants receiving partial #Vaccination, 20.91% completing the primary series, and 14,761 (27.44%) receiving one booster. Additionally, 23,258 (43.24%) were in the un#Vaccinated group. Of the 53,789 hospitalized individuals, 17,916 (33.31%) had a #COVID19 #coronavirus diagnosis, 3535 (6.57%) had #COVID19 #coronavirus–related hospitalization, 961 (1.79%) were #COVID19 #coronavirus severe or critical cases, and 4130 (7.68%) had in-hospital death. The analysis revealed that the VE of booster #Vaccination in preventing #COVID19 #coronavirus–related hospital, severe or critical #COVID19 #coronavirus, and in-hospital death was 63.5% (95% CI 59.8%‐66.9%), 66.9% (95% CI 60.1%‐72.6%) and 79.4% (95% CI 77%‐81.5%), the VE of primary series 56% (95% CI 51.4%‐60.2%), 66.8% (95% CI 59%‐73%) and 66.4% (95% CI 63%‐69.5%). Conclusions: The first booster #Vaccination was associated with significantly reduced the risk of #COVID19 #coronavirus–related severe outcomes in older inpatients aged ≥80 years during the Omicron-dominant period. Considering the potential selection bias and unmeasured confounders, these estimates may reflect both the VE and the better baseline health status of the #Vaccinated older individuals.

Population-Level Impact of the Enterovirus A71 #Vaccination Program on Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease: Ecological Time-Series Study Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), a common childhood illness caused by various enteroviruses, poses a significant #PublicHealth threat in the Asia-Pacific region, where severe cases associated with enterovirus A71 (EV71) are a major concern. The EV71 #Vaccination program was introduced in China in late 2016. Although randomized controlled trials have established the robust efficacy and safety of these #Vaccines, assessing their real-world performance remains crucial. Subsequent studies have evaluated its real-world effectiveness in several provinces, including Zhejiang and Guangdong. However, evidence on its real-world impact in reducing EV71-associated HFMD in Jiangsu Province remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to describe HFMD #Epidemiological characteristics and to evaluate the population-level effectiveness of the EV71 #Vaccination program in Jiangsu Province. Methods: We characterized the temporal distribution of EV71-related HFMD cases based on longitudinal #Surveillance data collected through the National Notifiable Diseases #Surveillance System in Jiangsu Province from 2012 to 2019 and assessed the impact of #Vaccination using a Bayesian structural time series model under a counterfactual framework. The intervention effect of the EV71 #Vaccine was estimated by comparing the observed data with predictions from a counterfactual model scenario without #Vaccination. Results: A total of 932,274 HFMD cases were reported in Jiangsu from 2012 to 2019, including 5190 (0.56%) severe cases. An estimated 140,876 (15.11%) cases were attributed to EV71. EV71-associated HFMD cases showed a marked decline, with estimated numbers of 22,303, 9796, and 3900 in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively. We estimated that 30,117 EV71 cases (95% credible interval −1777 to 93,601) were prevented by the #Vaccination program from 2017 to 2019, corresponding to a reduction of 45.55% (95% credible interval −5.19% to 72.22%). The effectiveness of #Vaccination increased annually, with reductions of −1.03% (95% credible interval −94.85% to 48.29%) in 2017, 55.54% (95% credible interval 13.94%-77.56%) in 2018, and 82.28% (95% credible interval 65.77%-90.89%) in 2019. Furthermore, we observed that children younger than 4 years obtained greater benefits compared with those older than 4 years, with the greatest reduction of 57.68% (95% credible interval 13.04%-79.65%) in the 3- to 4-year age group, followed by a 48.09% (95% credible interval 28.00%-62.98%) reduction in the 0- to 2-year age group. In contrast, the reduction was markedly lower, at 16.75 % (95% credible interval −96.53% to 65.47%) in children older than 4 years during the 2017 to 2019 period. Conclusions: EV71 #Vaccination is an effective measure to prevent HFMD. The sharp decline in EV71-associated HFMD cases following the implementation of the EV71 #Vaccination program suggests a potential causal relationship. Therefore, strengthening #Vaccine coverage remains a #PublicHealth priority.

I’m Sure Glad I Bought an EV and Solar Panels In 2024, my wife and I had a baby, and we needed a new car. After much research, I went with a Hyundai Kona EV. It was relatively cheap, it has decent range, and enough space for a small family. The stereotype of EVs is that they are for environmentally conscious liberals to do their part to fight climate change. And that’s true to some degree, if somewhat outdated when applied to, say, the gargantuan Silverado EV truck. It’s also slowly becoming well known that EVs are much cheaper to operate than gas cars, at least if you can charge at home. Fully charging my Kona from dead flat off grid power where I live costs roughly ten bucks. About the only regular maintenance it requires is a yearly tire rotation—no oil changes, no timing belt adjustments, no valve clearance checks, etc. Insurance costs are not that different from a gas-powered car. More from Ryan Cooper: Trump’s Senseless Waste in Iran But there is an underappreciated aspect to this benefit: fuel price _security_. You might buy a gas-powered Ford F-150 (the most popular passenger vehicle in America), figuring that you can afford 21 miles per gallon when gas is under $3. Then the senile gangster president starts a war with Iran because of … something, leading Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz, which carries 20 percent of the world’s oil production. Storage facilities in Iraq and Saudi Arabia quickly fill up, leading to production pauses. That causes the price of oil to shoot up from $65 a barrel to $90 in a week. Gasoline futures and gas prices quickly follow, at a lag. According to AAA, the national average price of regular gas hit $3.32 on Friday, up 35 cents in a week, with more to come. The longer the strait remains closed—and there is no sign whatsoever that the war is going to stop, as Trump is now demanding UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER, whatever that might mean—the longer and more difficult it will be to restart oil production. Oil could easily shoot past $150 a barrel. We might just surpass the all-time American record of $5 per gallon reached back in 2022. Now, electricity prices can and do increase over time. But such increases are virtually always much slower and more predictable than the wild gyrations in oil prices, given how much of the power bill reflects large fixed investments made decades ago. And even if your bill is shooting up because of nearby data centers, there’s a solution for that too. ## Today On TAP This story first appeared in our _Today On TAP_ newsletter, a weekday email featuring commentary on the daily news from Robert Kuttner and Harold Meyerson. Sign up An EV’s price security is strengthened when you add solar power to the equation. Last year, I took my own advice and set up a Joad family–style solar system by propping six panels against my fence and using them to charge up two battery power stations, which I then lug across my basement to juice up the car a little bit at night. The panels are sited poorly and shaded much of the day; nevertheless, even during winter, if it is sunny, I can produce just about enough power to account for the Kona’s modest daily needs. Very soon, I’ll have to find other ways to use up the power. I had to shell out a few thousand dollars for that equipment, but after that it is all gravy. Global commodity markets can’t affect that in the slightest. (And just speaking personally, I find dumping each load of hand-harvested electrons into my car deeply satisfying. It’s my own personal middle finger to all the right-wing oil barons and murderous petrostate dictators.) Solar increases the climate benefit of an EV too, as you are charging it with 100 percent renewable power, rather than including some coming from coal and/or gas, which is the case in most of the country (though it’s still much better than an internal combustion car). Alas, on Thursday afternoon my poor Kona suffered a hit-and-run from some reckless driver, and will have to be in the shop for a while. The only available loaner car, naturally, is some hulking SUV. But even that will illustrate the increasing benefits for going electric. Trump may have repealed Joe Biden’s EV subsidies, but in a way he is replacing them by making gas-powered driving much more expensive. The sooner you go EV, the sooner you can be free from the oil price gyrations caused by yet another deranged Republican war in the Middle East. ## Read more ### I’m Sure Glad I Bought an EV and Solar Panels Trump’s idiotic war of aggression on Iran is spiking oil prices.
