A yellowjacket (aka hornet), Vespula pennsylvanica, head downward, on old, cracked wood. The yellowjacket is black with broad, brilliant yellow stripes, crosswise on the abdomen (5 wavy bands, then a split band) and then in a varied pattern on the thorax and head. Narrow, brown wings, orange antennae, mostly yellow legs. Beside the insect, there's a small patch of lichen, as bright yellow as the hornet's stripes.

Going through old specimens has turned up this female and male Arescon iridescens wasp of the Mymaridae found in Brede High Woods in July 2023. A new species for me, and a very rarely found species. Good find!
