This is a scenic shot of a mountain range with a wet meadow in the foreground. The land, once part of a farm, was sold to New York State in 1966. At one time, the landscape included a photogenic red barn, much loved by photographers because of its rustic charm and location in the foreground of the vista. In December 2016, the aging barn was removed by New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation, because it was seen as a safety hazard. The small parking area by the road was paved and a wooden viewing platform was added. This site attracts Red-winged Blackbirds on the meadow and Indigo Buntings on the edges of the open area.

Two Canada Geese are floating in the calm waters of an oxbow in the Ausable River near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This pair nested on a little island of vegetation nearby, and the female incubated the eggs all day, every day, while her male partner drove off all intruders. I wasn’t able to determine the fate of their offspring. I missed a day of photography, and found the nest deserted with fragments of eggs close by. Canada Goose goslings typically abandon the nest within 24 to 48 hours after hatching, so I am hopeful that’s what happened in my absence.

The image shows a board walk through a Northern White Cedar Swamp at the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb, New York, which is in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. A Northern White Cedar Swamp is a conifer or mixed swamp found on organic soils in poorly drained depressions or along lakes and streams in the northern half of New York State. As the name implies, the dominant tree in this kind of forest is the Northern White Cedar.

Characteristic wildflowers found on hummocks in Northern White Cedar Swamps include Goldthread, Starflower, Bunchberry, Canada Mayflower, Clintonia, Creeping Snowberry, and Partridgeberry. In the hollows between hummocks, you might find Cinnamon Fern and Royal Fern. Characteristic birds in Northern White Cedar Swamps include Northern Waterthrush, Winter Wren, White-throated Sparrow, and Golden-crowned Kinglet.

Some yellow flowers are blooming on the edge of a stream. The plant is called Swamp Candles. This is a native perennial plant with spikes of yellow flowers that appear in July and August. It is found in wetland habitats, such as marshes and bogs. I photographed these plants on a boardwalk through a wetland at the Paul Smiths VIC, a nature preserve in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

A small gray, black and white bird is perched on a branch. It’s a Black-capped Chickadee, one of two species of chickadees we see here in the Adirondack Mountains. The other is the Boreal Chickadee, which has a similar plumage pattern, with a brown cap and much smaller white cheek patch. I rarely catch a glimpse of the Boreal Chickadee, but the Black-capped Chickadee is probably the most common bird I see in the winter, when they flock to our feeders. They survive our harsh winters by caching food in bark, dead leaves, or knotholes. They spend very cold nights roosting in thick vegetation or cavities, tucking their heads under their scapular feathers to conserve body heat.

A yellow, black and gray bird is perched on a branch. This is a Magnolia Warbler – a songbird that breeds in dense conifers, particularly second-growth spruce trees. The Magnolia Warbler is one of the many misnamed birds. The bird has no connection to magnolias. Both the species name (magnolia) and the nonscientific name – Magnolia Warbler – trace back to 1810, when ornithologist Alexander Wilson collected a warbler from a magnolia tree in Mississippi. Wilson apparently recommended the more descriptive name "Black-and-Yellow Warbler," and some 19th century sources lists the species by that name. However, the inappropriate "Magnolia Warbler" is the name in use today.

This is a scenic shot of a small waterfall on West Branch of the Ausable River in the Adirondack Mountains near Lake Placid in upstate New York. The Adirondack region is characterized by a radial drainage pattern, with streams and rivers flowing outward toward the edge of the dome, in some cases following the dominant north-northeast valleys. The Ausable River, like the Saranac River, flows north, draining into the St Lawrence via Lake Champlain, while the Schroon River flows south, draining into the Hudson.

A large dark brown bird with a white head and open wings is perched on some debris in the middle of a river by the Hulls Falls Road in Keene. This road, which is located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Part in upstate New York, is a favorite haunt of birders in all seasons, because you never know what you are going to find along the river. I have also happened upon some nice mammal species, like River Otters and American Mink.

A small wood warbler is perched on a branch in summer. The bird is a The Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia). As the name implies, this bird sports a black and white striped crown and back. The photo was taken on the John Brown Farm trails near Lake Placid in upstate New York. This stylish warbler is a habitat generalist. It breeds in a variety of deciduous and mixed woodlands, in both mature and second-growth forests. In New York State, the Black-and-white Warbler occupies a variety of breeding habitats, including alpine krummholz, early to mid-successional forest, mature and second growth deciduous and mixed forests, and forested wetlands. It is most abundant in early successional forest conditions.

A gray and white bird with a very long tail is perched on the branch of a conifer in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. These birds used to be called Gray Jays, but Canadian birders lobbied to have the name changed, in hopes that the Gray Jay would be named the national bird of Canada. A bill to formalize the designation was introduced last May, but it’s still in committee.
