A red stem topped with a cluster of pink flower buds pokes out of a hole in the snow. Crystal clear water droplets can be seen on some of the buds, and one bud is starting to open. Green leaves can barely be seen hiding under the snow crust.

During our unexpected Friday the 13th storm, a Bergenia plant was completely buried. By the next morning, the flowers had come up for air, while the leaves were still out of sight.
