Weekend #FishPuke. This largemouth bass puked up a few soft plastic baits after I caught it. I pick up a few dozen of these baits off of lake bottoms each year, and apparently bass do too!
A biologist holds a largemouth bass with a bullhead sticking out of the bass’s mouth.
Still recovering from a fantastic, albeit exhausting, week at #AFS155 and #BB2025! Guessing this Largemouth also needed some time to recover after we removed its most recent meal while conducting #fishpuke research a few years ago. #52FishyFridays 🐟🐠🌎

Friend caught a smallmouth bass and it coughed up a baby green heron. #fishpuke @kgladefishsci.bsky.social
This took way too long, but I think this paper will be super useful for folks analyzing stomach contents of predator fish and other fish-eating critters. Give me a shout if you want the pdf! #fishpuke 🐟🐠🌎🧪

A smallmouth bass with a trout perch that it had eaten and puked up.
#FishPuke from this weekend during a trip to Voyageurs National Park. This smallmouth bass puked up a trout perch *with force* while I was unhooking it.

New paper with some great coauthors, including a couple fantastic undergrads! We show evidence for relationships between fish length and bony structures that are resistant to digestion, and provide reference photos to identify fishes based on otolith shape. #fishpuke 🐟🐠🌎🧪

A biologist holds a muskellunge (large fish) on a measuring board while another biologist off camera flushes the fish’s stomach to examine its prey.
My advisor provides hard-cover copies of each student’s thesis after their successful defense, and this was the photo I selected for the cover of mine. Looking forward to a discussion about my thesis work on muskellunge and #fishpuke later today! #52FishyFridays 🐟🐠🎣
“Congratulations! I have recommended your manuscript…for publication…” Tough to beat that email first thing on a Monday morning! Excited to share this one, I think it’ll be useful to a lot of folks working with piscivore diets and other #fishpuke research! 🐟🐠🌎🧪

A fisheries scientist presents research findings to a room full of anglers.
Had a great time talking muskellunge research and management with an area angling group last night! #fishpuke #SciComm 🐟🐠🎣
A walleye in a dip net. The golden fish is partially lifted out of the water with another fish, a partially digested burbot, hanging from its mouth.
Only fitting that this week’s #52FishyFridays photo is a walleye, the state fish of Minnesota, after a fantastic MN chapter @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social meeting! This particular individual lost its lunch, a burbot, after entering the spawning trap last spring #fishpuke 🐟🐠
Finally transferred my old posts from The Old Place. For those that didn’t follow me there, here’s a thread outlining my first publication, looking at #fishpuke from predators in Minnesota lakes. #FishSci 🐟🐠🌎🧪
After all, fish are friends, birds are food! #fishpuke #TeamFish #BirdsvsFish 🐟🐠🌎🧪
We compared diets of four freshwater fish in Minnesota to see how muskellunge, a large predator stocked in many lakes, affect other popular species. We found that muskellunge diets were different from other species, mostly because they were able to eat larger prey! #fishpuke #TeamFish #FishSky 🐟🐠🌎🧪

One of the coolest things to happen to me at a @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social conference was having people I followed on Twitter respond “oh, you’re the #fishpuke guy!” after I introduced myself. 🐟🌎🧪
The fact that I broke my nose in middle school turned out to be a blessing for me in grad school, where I worked on a fish diet project. Kendra, my intern, was not so lucky! #fishpuke #TeamFish #FishSky #SciComm 🧪🌎🐟
I’m Kamden. I’m a fisheries biologist in Minnesota. I primarily work in fisheries management, including stocking and population monitoring. I also conduct research on population dynamics and trophic ecology, or as I like to call it, #fishpuke!

A walleye and partially digested burbot laying on a dock.
Fieldwork started this week with annual walleye spawning operations, but we got a little bonus #fishpuke as well from this walleye that couldn’t keep its meal down! 🐟 🧪 #TeamFish #FishSci
A photo of an article featuring fish diet research from In-Fisherman magazine.
I subscribed to In-Fisherman as a kid and read every issue cover to cover. In college, an article about a catfish tracking study led to changing my major. Seeing my name and name photo in the latest issue is surreal!

The face of a bigmouth buffalo, with unique black spots visible on the fish’s forehead.
I present a bigmouth buffalo for long-lived fishes day of #GarWeek. Incidentally sampled while collecting #fishpuke on Pelican lake in western Minnesota #TeamFish #FishSky
Alright #TeamFish, I need a little help. Attempting to estimate predator trophic levels from #fishpuke, but unable to find literature values of some prey, particularly terrestrial prey items. Any suggestions?
Internal anatomy check of a northern pike yesterday came with quite the surprise…chalk up another point for #TeamFish! Also, the mosquitoes in northern MN are absolutely brutal right now #fishsci #scicomm #fishpuke
