Photograph taken using a macro setting of bright yellow gorse flowers in a hedgerow. The sunlight catches the blooms. Behind the flowers is the brown and deep green tangle of branches and thorns of the hedgerow and a pinprick of blue sky through from the other side. Took the image looking up at the flowers. Mum says; "When gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of season" whenever she sees it. Quite a fun saying and given there are a few varieties the season is never ending - hoorah!

The #gorse adds such color to the wedding that it is declared a very good choice by all in attendance. The purple accents are intelligently placed and the flowers highlight them perfectly. It is a wedding rich in all things, one tying together two families.

In 1622 Jeffrey Cremer, the owner of East Field foldcourse in Snettisham was accused of digging up a 16-acre covert of mature #furze (also known as #gorse). This extremely prickly shrub had two uses: providing shelter for grazing sheep and it was also a vital source of fuel for local residents.

First bloom spotted in the garden in 2026 goes to #rose, #gorse, #periwinkle, #thrift and winter #aconite. All but the last one were a common sight in #Tudor England. The winter aconite arrived here at the end of Elizabeth’s reign and was first recorded in 1597.
