This was my favourite GW box game back in the day (closely followed by Space Hulk). Advanced Heroquest opened my eyes to solo tabletop gaming, and the modular dungeon generation tables I still use in my #soloRPG games are based on the ones in the AHQ rulebook.

If you haven't I can't recommend it enough. I cried very hard the first time I played it. It's simple and beautiful and allows the player to dive to whatever emotional depth they're comfortable with.
Plus it's indie horror RPG. Can't go wrong.

(Mark up of a selection from a article describing a fictional play for a sci-fi sole roleplaying log.) ## The Madness of The Admiral ### Summary This is the play that Aurora is going to attend so she can meet the courier, and get the information on the job she was hired for. Although Aurora (And many others) would think that the play is covering the beginnings of the Control War, this play is much older than that conflict, and actually takes place during the limited wars of the second consensus crisis. It is a dramatisation of the defection of a Construct admiral from a rebel faction back to the Space Princesses that they broke away from, presented as the admiral getting driven insane by the neural link between him and the Space princess admiral of the opposing fleet. Whether this was ever a historical incident, or pure fiction has been lost to time. But the concerns raised in the first act do presage a lot of the issues that came boiling to the forefront during the Control War, plus the pure mysteriousness of the seduction/ insanity/ bribe/ persuasive argument that the Space Princess presents in the second act allow for a wide range of emotional and rational reactions from the admiral, which is why it is a popular choice for performances today. #### Avant Garde Interpretations Most avant garde interpretations of The Madness tend to involve which of the roles the main actor chooses to be. The traditional choice is that of the admiral, which gives the most flexibility as to what the play is about. A common secondary choice is the admiral's lover, a mecha pilot, although this is more limited, forcing the play into the shape of a tragedy . An extremely controversial choice is the Space Princess, which tends to tip the play towards eldritch horror.
A nice thing about #solorpg roleplaying is that you can let your #worldbuilding get out of control, and start writing a synopsis for a play that is purely background detail for what should be a fairly quick scene to play out. Behold:

「日常の中に当たり前に異質な存在が居座っている」という世界観。ただの不思議現象ではなく、「意思疎通ができる（かもしれない）同居人」とともに一ヶ月の日記を書いてみる。 Day.1(2026.03.01)：赤6追加｜黄_黄2_赤6 部屋の電気を点けて、すぐ消したくなった。部屋の隅に、『それ』はそっと収まっている。僕と同じメガネ、服装の異性だった。見つめられると、くすぐったい気がする。思わず、手に持っていたレシートを『それ』のおでこに貼ってしまった。僕の鼓動が何とか元に戻ると、レシートがお札へと変わっている。 Day.2(2026.03.02)：黄0追加｜赤_黄5_黄0 『それ』呼びはダメと、親に怒られた。戸惑いを感じつつ、『オフ』と名付ける。その夜、初めて声を出した。叫ぶように、歌うように。怒りが籠っているようにも感じた。名前が原因なのか？手を振り上げようとしたので、拝借してきたアイスをそっと握らせた。悪戯をやりきったように、彼女が笑っている。 Day.3(2026.03.03)：緑6追加｜青_青5_緑3 『オフ』と静かに呼んでみても、彼女の反応が良くない。まさか、付けた名前は良くない意味なのか？『オフ』のお札に触れようと、伸ばした手の小指を握られた。月蝕の夜、数度の瞬きの後は僕の部屋にいたヴィジョンを見る。深まる不安と、馴染めぬ名前。アイスの甘さに、ほんの少し安心したようだった。 Day.4(2026.03.04)：黄1追加｜緑_黄7_黄1 『オフ』と呼び続けたからか、アイスにつられたからか、彼女の反応が改善され始めた。でも、アイス以外にも食べてもらいたいのだが？ふと、悪戯の仕返しを思いついた。わさび味のポテトチップスを砕いて、アイスにまぶしてみる。最初は非難の目を向けられたが、しかめっ面の後に、驚きの表情を見せた。 Day.5(2026.03.05)：黄4追加｜赤_青4_青8 帰ったら、部屋がすごく散らかっていた。芸術？遊び？変な虫でも出た？全部首を横に振られた。掃除？仕分け？模様替え……頷いた！？何か、昨日までにない距離感を凍らせる間があった。いや、強がりみたいな恥じらいか？どうせ、親の茶飲み仲間が何か言ったな。年頃の男女がうんぬん……そもそも人か？ Day.6(2026.03.06)：赤9追加｜緑_青0_青R 一度気になり出したら、確かに気になり出してきた。『オフ』は、確実に人間じゃない。でも僕と同じメガネ、服装をした異性なのは確かだ。中々に痛い出費だが、カーテンポールとカーテンも買う。買い物をしている間、『オフ』の視線を感じていた。彼女が外にいるのは初め……普段は何をしてるんだろう？ Day.7(2026.03.07)：黄9追加｜赤_赤1_黄4 部屋を仕切るカーテンを付け、『オフ』が散らかした部屋を片付ける。仕上げに、そっと掃除機をかけた。彼女が、掃除機の音を真似し始める。何か、掃除機に対抗心を燃やし始めた。人の姿で吸い込むなら、食べ物だけにして欲しい。掃除機の挙動が変になったと思ったら、『オフ』がイタズラをしたようだ。 Day.8(2026.03.08)：青3追加｜赤_緑0_青3 その遊びは、不意に始まった。『オフ』がカーテンの隙間から、石ころ、折り紙、木の実など差し出してくる。それに色を塗って返すのだ。彼女の気に入らない色を塗ると、後でデコピンされる。どうやら、デコピンの回数が少ないと僕の勝ちのようだ。すれ違っているようで、何か擦り合わせている気がした。 Day.9(2026.03.09)：青S追加｜緑_緑R_青S 前は『オフ』のお札に触れようと、伸ばした手の小指を握られた。今回は赦しを得たいのに乞うように、まずは彼女へ言葉を投げかける。何度かの瞬きを見ながら、『オフ』の頬にそっと触れてみた。人肌の温かみはなく、柔らかさだけが伝わってくる。その手触りを言葉で表現できず、ただ視線がぶつかった。 Day.10(2026.03.10)：黄R追加｜黄_黄6_黄9 最初、外から入ってきた匂いなのかと思った。湿った土や木肌を思わせる、雨のような匂い。余白を縫うように通り抜ける、墨汁のようなスモーキーさ。バニラに似た濃厚な甘さもあった。『オフ』が、カーテンの真下を足先でなぞっている。畳に映るカーテンの影の中に、見知らぬ緑がそっと生い茂っていた。 Day.11(2026.03.11)：赤3追加｜赤_緑5_赤3 影の中に見知らぬ緑を引き連れるカーテンを見て、ふと思ったことがある。『オフ』が外にいる姿を見たことがなかった。視線を感じたことはあるが、彼女の姿を見たわけではない。親には見えていたが、赤の他人に『オフ』が認識できるのか気になった。彼女の方を見れば、怒りを主張する視線を向けられる。
