I took this photograph 10 years ago but it still seems like yesterday. This photo was taken on the Gaylor Lakes Trail in Yosemite National Park. The trail is not in the main valley, so It was not heavily traveled. I think we saw maybe one other hiker on this trail. It was difficult, it's an out and back of about 2 mi or 4 MI round trip but there's a thousand feet in elevation gain. We were rewarded for the climb with this amazing view of mountain tops in the distance, and alpine lakes and meadows surrounding us. I took this photo as we turned around to go down the mountain because this storm rolled in very quickly. 5 minutes later we were running by that lake in the distance getting pelted by hail. The storm ended up being so intense that the road below had some rock slides and creating some traffic problems for the park. The image is in black and white, and there is a mirroring effect between the top half and the bottom half of the composition. The rocky mountain top with an inset lake reflecting the sky is mimicked by the clouds hanging low above it. Central in the composition where the clouds are not dark, the bright mountain peaks shine. The foreground though is dark and foreboding, shaded by the angry storm that's about to unleash itself.
