A small Tupperware half filled with strawberry slices, with moths I've captured for the week since it's so cold all feasting. There's a rather active brown shaded grey geometer moth, a shy Roland's sallow moth, and 3 different common oak moths (only one is actually eating like a normal person)

Oct 2025 I identified some Common Reed mines containig Cosmopterix scribalella larvae at #RSPBFowlmere - I kept a single mine in a jar, and today an adult eclosed - at the moment I am assuming the same species, although I will get it checked #teammoth #cambsmoths

A micro-moth with dark brown wings with two creamy-yellow stripes horizontally across the middle and a series of short creamy-yellow stripes along the wing-edges. The moth is perched on a green leaf and is casting a shadow.
This rather dapper moth is the Liquorice Piercer (Grapholita pallifrontana), our Species of the Month. ✨
The Liquorice Piercer is so named because its caterpillars pierce Wild Liquorice seed pods.

So, this was my first Hawk-moth of the year! - the amazing looking Eyed Hawk-moth - Smerinthus ocellata - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of March 2026.
And my second Cerura iberica - the Iberian version of the Puss Moth - Cerura vinula - found elsewhere in Europe. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of March 2026.

This Agrotis sp. looked a bit unusual for an Agrotis spinifera, but I can't manage to make it into any other species! It is the first I have seen this spring! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of March 2026.
And a first of the year for me - Red-headed Chestnut - Conistra erythrocephala and probably a wanderer from the Alcornocales nearby. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of March 2026.
I went for a Friday night out in Tarifa and this was my dusk view on my walk after the sun had set! And those specks of dirt on my photo in the sky are not dirt, but are actually Black Kites migrating north across the Straits - even this late in the evening. I estimated there were about 50 per minute flying through - so if my maths is right then that is 3,000 per hour!?
